Stopped in for a short visit yesterday morning with Manitoba delica, visited a little too long and had to put the spacegear into hyperspeed to try and make it to winnipeg on time. Topped out at 160km (157km on the gps) at about 4200rpm. Climbed up to 150km fairly quickly, but took about 3 minutes for the last 10km. Not too shabby for a tank. (was still late, but all is good)

Do you have stock sized tires? Sound like your speedo is extremely accurate.

Yes you are correct. A 2.8 in good running order can do 160. I would be very careful doing that if you had dodgee tyres. Some Oz dealers put on the cheapest tyres they can get and have been known to blow out at a lot slower than 160.. I much prefer doing 160 in my Rex in 3rd with a few revs left an 2 more gears to go :-D ..I had to do a panic stop late one afternoon from 140 as a mob of roos ran out on the road head of me. I would not advise driving that fast in a Delica. Even with ABS ,which most of you want have, they take ages to stop. Cheers

Sorry I didn't state tire size, I had fully intended to, tires are 265/70R15. Yokohama geolanders. I don't know how much faith to put in the gps, it is a Magelin one that crappy tire had on sale over a year ago for $50. The directions from it are great, but I don't know how much faith to put in the speed.

any instantaneous speed from a GPS is useless, but the sustained speed will be deadly accurate.

Sorry, I'm a little ignorant when it comes to the gps and similar gadgets. It shows my speed in the lower left corner, I would guess it is what you call instantanious, but really don't know. I do know I wasn't being passed by anyone, and the enforcement officer who stopped me for a friendly chat didn't say how fast I was going, and I didn't have the balls to ask him. Being an emergency personel does have advantages, but I wasn't going to push things.

What I meant was that if you glance at the GPS once and take the speed reading it may or may not be accurate, as a reflection of a building, or a temporary loss of signal, or various other issues can cause it to be out by a ton. however if the same reading persists for a few seconds, you can pretty much guarantee that it is dead accurate.

The GPS satellites effectively send only one piece of information down, and that's time, the GPS receiver calculates where you are based on the time it takes for the signal from various satellites to reach you, as such, the receiver knows 2 things, the time, and your location, if you know time and location twice, you know speed between those 2 points. it's a pretty difficult calculation to get wrong. (the only catch is as I pointed out above, all sorts of transient things can mess up your position, but usually only mess up one reading, not the next, so if the speed reading stays consistent then likely it's bang on)

Good to know, thanks, speed was consistant on the open highway for almost 1 hour. (except for slowing down twice for passing through towns).
