My wife and I will be in Thailand next year on our return journey to the Antipodes. There is discussion of checking out a cave near Chiang Mai so hopefully we'll stop in.

The main Island of Grand Terra in the Antarctic ocean, wow that is very adventurous of you. Or just mentioning of your hitting the other side of the globe? http://www.antipodemap.com/ was bookmarked in my travel folder so I typed in Canmore.

Did you have a cave in mind? My son and I have visited about nine in the area, but haven't explored too deep - the number of bats is intense. There is a good variety of caves in the north, from ones off the beaten track that are hard to find to the ones that are well lighted, stair accessed and heavily visited.

We went back to this one with jeans, long shirts and lights; but didn't go as far in as possible due to a failing batteries in one light. This is one of the many that rarely gets visitors and have pretty rough roads leading in - plus no directions available in english.

Nowadays, you do your reporting online. So as long as you have a 'net connection, who's to know?

A couple of years ago when I told them ahead of time that I would be out of the country for 2 weeks. The nice person at the office warned me I would not receive benefits for those 2 weeks. I knew that. What I didn't expect was that, when I got back, I'd receive all kinds of nastygrams from them cutting me off for those 2 weeks because I was un-available.

I've never reported being out of the country again. Live and learn.

There is a recently discovered cave near Chiang Mai that is rumoured to be the deepest in Thailand. I've been in contact with a friend of a friend who runs this website http://www.thailandcaves.shepton.org.uk/ and he has a few projects to check out. That looks like an interesting entrance above, I've read a lot of the caves are marked as temple caves?

In regards to submitting online, the only thing you may want to consider is if they track IP addresses. You could just leave your home computer on and RDP into it, remotely from anywhere in the world, to submit your forms etc.

or someone could do it for you.

Thanks for the link, finding caves so far has been from varies sources; maps, sometimes a recommendation, or just following a trail that has a small sign that indicates a cave. Interesting that many of the caves listed as the longest in Thailand are in nearby province. The temple cave is a good term, some our run by monks and others down some hidden goat track have a little Buddha inside. Haven’t explored two others we’ve found that seem to be the home for a solitary monk.

That's pretty neat that a guy lives in there, I guess the caves there are a bit warmer than here.

If you're interested we'll get you down on a trip or two? I'm keen to do a motobike day tour, my wife just doesn't want to ride inner-city. Apparently it's a little hectic.

Wow thanks again for that link, again, shocked at myself for not Googling it earlier. The cave entrance pictured is listed only as 400m deep, so we did go as far as possible. One of the caves we explored in Chiang Dao is reported to be 1685 meters deep, intense. Wanna get myself a GPS now to aid finding more!

Sounds like a plan, we can explore a cave and do some riding in the mountains. We have a pretty open schedule, but suffering a bit today; a drunk slammed his bike into me during the crazniess of the Loy Kratong festival last night. Good advice is not to ride at night.

I hadn't seen those Google Map overlays, Martin has alot of info on that site. We're still planning our itinerary but I'm hoping to do a week or two caving. I'll get in touch closer to the date, feel free to PM me with any info, we appreciate any trip ideas.

Sunday Nov 1st

Still here and doing fine, thought I'd share my most recent holiday traveling. Chiang Mai to Mae Sariang, South on the 105 to the Mae Ngao National Park. 612 km return to the lazy boy, more pictures here.

Left CM at first light, this was headed down the mountain towards Mae Sariang; brrrr does it get chilly on the other side of the mountain. Rain gear took care of that, but note to self - buy warmer gloves.

Most of the road followed the river, this was quite a treat.

Getting near the end of the road, but according to passing NGO's the Salaween River was only a kilometer away accessed via trails not passable by truck. Maybe, just maybe, a bike with street tires might try it's luck next time. That is if time was spent riding and not pursuing our hobbies.



Most of the road was soft sand and rocks, the last 30 km was traveled at speeds mostly under 30 kph.







This was a return trip to explore farther up river, earlier this month greatly enjoyed some of this (pictured below) in the same park.



Back on the road the very next day to Mae Sot on the Burma border, 840 km return all paved.
