OK, I just bought Adrock Delica yesterday!

Here is the Plan for now:

Flush the cooling system, new hoses: Coolent Diesel Wet Liner Specific -any suggestions of make? Thermostat is newer.

New timing belt, balancer belt and tensioners -any suggestions of make? (and accessory belts since I am in there and water pump if warrented)

Transmission Fluid (5 Speed) -Calls for Hypoid Gear Oil SAE 75-90 or 75W-85W conforming to API GL-4 (Hard to find GL-4)
What are people using? I know for Toyota's the syncros do not seem to like newer API GL-5 stuff? Anyone adding additives for the syncros? Anyone using Synthetic? RECOMMENDED BRAND

Rear Diff -Fluid?? COuld not find in the manual, I assume the same as the front. How do you know if it has a limited slip? IF so what are people using for additive?

Basically build a Westfellia Camper out of it (either pop up roof or solid fiberglass, pro and cons of both)

Your unit looks to be a 1990
It won't be a limited slip. Same as mine.
Although if the PO changed it you would. Im guessing he didn't.
Im sure he would have mentioned it.
For the diffs use a synthetic gear oil heavy weight.
You can get containers of it at can tire for under 20$
Don't get too worried about all the ratings.

A limited slip rear differential van will have a rectangular orange warning sticker in the driver's door (basically telling you to use limited slip differential oil instead of regular diff oil). If the diffs been changed, or the sure-fire way to tell if the little sticker is gone, is to hoist/jack the rear end, rotate one wheel on one side and if the other side rotates the same way it's limited slip; different directions of rotation, regular differential.

A Westfalia top is a bit smaller than the roof of a Delica, but might fit well. Watch for the 'ribs' in the centre of the rear seating - it holds the van together. A custom job should work well, especially if you've done this kind of thing before.

As for oils, synthetic is nice if it gets retarded cold, but otherwise it's just expensive oil. Regular maintenance is sufficient to keep things running smoothly.

Picked up a box of parts today.... Either tomorrow or next Saturday. I have it booked to get the cooling system flused and then take the rad in for a cleaning.

I have no fear taking a cutting wheel and welder to things.... Leaning towards the hightop (quick and easy), but ferry costs and more to push into the wind.....

oh well get it running first.

These already have the aerodynamic coefficient of a brick so I wouldn't worry too much about what a hightop is going to do. Ferry cost? Yes, I don't miss paying over-height any more.

The stock high-roof delica sits at about 6'10" and therefore is still under the 7' over height rule on BC ferries, with a theoretical 2" to spare (I'd be VERY nervous if they put a 7' vehicle on the upper deck though!)

A low roof delica is a couple inches shorter too, and most pop-tops start from a low-roof vehicle. the total height, I would expect, could still be below 7'

Also think of the extra weight a hightop fiberglass would add on there with gear.

Felix posted a youtube clip of a yellow lifted L300 with a hightop I believe. It tipped over on it's side while the camera man expressed the 'S' word in German.

,note nice dent in the port quarter!
Looks like the made sure they brought enough beer too.



I personally think the sail area would be scary and awful in a good crosswind,
especially on a lifted unit.

Still not sure which way to go. I was thinking with the Fibreglass roof I would aim for 5'6" height inside (me and wife are not very tall!) and I would only cut out the roof section in the middle leaving the ends factory with storage up top for feather pillows only!!!! That way you can stand only in the kitchen area.

I went to the RV Show yesterday. Rear slide out through hatch for bed???

Anyhow, this Saturday I am going to do the maintenance on it then we will start planning.
