Battery isolator
I bought a battery isolator as it was on sale and I was told it had a switch but it doesn't. Is there any way of adding a switch to the isolator or will I have to scrap this one and spend $100 on another one?

Take it back, get an exchange if they have the product you need or get your money back. Telling you it does something that it really doesn't is false advertising.

Re: Battery isolator
Unfortunately it was one of those black friday online non-refundable deals. It was only $40 with free shipping down for $180 so really not worth the hassle to send it back. I figured I might be able to modify it for less than the cost of a new one though!?

Re: Battery isolator
Dou you have a pic? Also All I ever used before was a regular ford solenoid to create a battery isolator (20 bucks) and a toggle switch (6 bucks) plus some wiring and a inline fuse. That way you have a cheap battery isolator with a switch and it is all local easy to access parts.

Re: Battery isolator
The Blue Sea Isolator I have in the parts for sale area comes with a switch that is an optional part , If you hunt for the online blue sea catalogue (Tardis posted a link a few years back) they show schematic drawings as well with sample circuits , maybe you have a compatible system..

92pajero, what is the Amperage the relay is rated for?
Artacoma, I haven't seen yours listed for sale, how much are you selling it for?

Re: Battery isolator
I could wire my isolator up the exact same way! Question is, where did you get the switch from since it has to handle the CCA's of the battery does it not? What gauge wire did you use too?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Battery isolator
all the switch should have to do is energize a low current coil which closes the main contacts in a relay which carry a high current. a switch should never have to carry full load current if wired properly. most switches should handle up to 10 amps. your cranking amps are 2-300 amps. minimum wiring should be at least 4GA for the main battery connections, 2ga is better. the switch wiring can be 14-16 ga. it depends on what the relay coil is rated for to energize.

Re: Battery isolator
The relay is rates for 200A. I was told 100 was a minimum. I'm not entirely clear on how any of this works so I may have to pick Jay of Tardisdeli's mind a bit. The isolator looks to be the same set-up as the relay shown above which boosts my confidence in the ability to make what I have work.

Re: Battery isolator
Gentlemen the switch in the diagram in this thread only has to handle 12 volts and no CCA since all it does is signal the solenoid to "close" and let the battery current travel. A ford solenoid as such in the diagram can handle a crap load of CCA since it handles regular battery CCA going through it. I used 16 guage wire for my switch and the ground running to the solenoid and I never use less than 4 guage for the battery connections and large solenoid connections, if possible 2 guage is preferred. One thing I forgot to add is that I run a 20 amp inline fuse between the switch and solenoid, just incase you ground out the wire someplace and don't wanna melt anything. If anyone has any questions gimme a shout and I will see if I can help out. By the way if anyone out here needs the glowplug relay/solenoid that Rising Sun is selling for 170 I can get an awesome deal on DENSO replacements for around 96 bucks taxes in.

I'm in ON on holidays right now , I'll post some pics and info on my isolator charge system when I'm back next weekend.

From Jay:
- A setup with a 3 position switch
- Use a 300 amp continuous duty solenoid such as Blue Sea BSS 9012 http://bluesea.com/products/9012

Looks like I'm still out of luck with my 200 amp isolator.
Nice drawing though, thanks for sharing!

Re: Battery isolator
What is making you out of lucky with your isolator? Is there something unique about it? As mentioned, through up a picture of it, or describe what hook-ups it has....... should have 4 typically, as per the pics: 2 for 200 amp through current and 2 more for an actuation coil.... give us some more info and we can probably make it work for you.nxski wrote:Looks like I'm still out of luck with my 200 amp isolator.
