I've just bought a 1998 L400 high-roof Super Exceed. I grew impatient waiting for an LWB and finally went for a short wheel base that my wife and I plan to camperize as time, ability and money permits. I eventually plan to install a small fridge (Engel, Arb, Dometic, etc...) once I get a second battery and solar panel setup, but that's still a ways off. In the meantime, I've been searching for alternatives to get me through some short preliminary trips in the new ride.

I've come across plenty of "high-performance" coolers made by companies like Yeti, Orca, Pelican, etc... which seem like they may do the trick. I'd like something to keep some basic staples like eggs, butter, meats and milk cold in remote areas for for up to 3 or 4 days. A week would be great, but I realize the limitations I'm facing. Space is at a premium so I'm unlikely to get anything larger than 35L.

Anyone have any experience with using these fancy high-priced coolers or alternative options in their Delicas?

If you go on the expedition portal forum there are often used coolers/fridges on there for good deals. I ended up getting a 35L arb for $700. My sister has a yeti and likes it, but wishes she just held out for an arb or dometic. They have low voltage cut off protection so you can get away without a second battery until you can afford it.

Good luck

Thanks for your insight Poochike. It always helps to keep the long-term goal in mind, especially since I've gone camping for decades without any sort of cooler device. When everything seems so exciting at the beginning of a build with a new vehicle, it's so easy to go overboard on all the little extras.

Igloo Super Tough STX is what we used since 2015. It keeps ice well.
