Help - changing 88 auto trans filter and small pin fell out!

Post by IdahoDoug »

I need help identifying this small pin, or perhaps a link to an assembly diagram on this trans. Yesterday I removed the trans oil pan to change the filter on my 1988 USA Van Wagon automatic (plate on trans says Model 03-72L). You have to next remove a section of the valve body in order to remove the filter. I very carefully lowered this valve body part as there are ball bearings just sitting atop it that must be kept in place. As I did so, a tiny pin fell onto my drain pan and I cannot figure out where it came from. It is slightly larger in diameter than pencil lead from a wooden pencil, and about a quarter inch in length.

FYI, it does not appear to be random debris, but it does not have any wear marks that hint as to its function.

Thanks in advance. I need real time help as the Van is completely disabled at this time.

So, figured it out as a retainer pin and put it back in. Now my issue is finding an exploded diagram that shows where the balls go in the valve body. I have 4 balls and the diagram says I should have 5. Draining the oil pan tomorrow just in case, but I don't think so.

Wow, now I'm terrified at the prospect of ever changing the trans filter... I'm highly skilled at accidentally exploding assemblies, and especially bad at things which in the service manual say "Pry with screwdriver or the like".

Well, Im pretty sure I was led astray on needing to take this valve body cover off to access the filter. I never gave it a thought on disassembly. But I will be paying attention on reassembly so I can tell you guys. It's a 30 minute deal for just the filter. Life and having other cars prevented me from getting back to it now after a week, and in the interim I have not found an accurate drawing of a 4 ball transmission to show where they go. Will update.

BIg Bird,

Yes, I did - thanks. In fact, at the end of the day the PDF for the auto trans here is what finally tipped me to place the ball check valves where I did this morning. It was terribly unclear. But the other manuals I found online were no better and some contradicted each other.

This morning I finally made my decision, and put them where my best guess was. Unfortunately for me, this valve body part did not need to come off as I'd read someplace, and the valve body is designed to be assembled upside down (!). So I learned a trick to use Vaseline, which has a low melting point to hold them up there upside down while I frantically slapped the valve body up there and got some bolts in. I'd had the foresight to use a Sharpie marker to mark the bolt holes where the longer bolts go. So reassembly using the marks was a snap - recommended. There are like 18 bolts. And of course the pin fell out again, but I got it up there after the balls, and it went together correctly.

I put in the new screen, cleaned the valve body, reinstalled the pan magnets, installed the pan with a new rubber gasket with just a thin film of black RTV, and filled the transmission. Drives as before with perhaps some placebo effect of smoothness and crisper shifts. Whew!
