I need an engine overhaul, in the USA

Post by davidb »

Hello everyone. I live in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. I am the proud owner of a 1990 Mitsubishi Van/wagon with about 150,000 miles. I am the second owners as of 1992 and 10,000 miles. About 1 year ago and 5,000 miles I had the engine completely gone through due to a headgasket being blown. Well as you can guess the overhaul did not last and I am now in need of someone else to do it again. I have viewed this website numerous times and am jeleous that we do not have your Delica's here in the states! I really enjoy my van/wagon and am not looking to get rid of it anytime soon. Everywhere I go in my van folks look at it and scratch their heads, smile, give me the thumbs up, or just look confused. I think I have the only running (well was running) L300 in the whole state of Indiana. I really need to find someone who knows these vans and who can do an overhaul again. I am willing to ship the van if need be, but would prefer to have the repairs done close to home. Any ideas, help, or directions would be GREATLY appreciated!

I'll be more than happy to call. But being from the US I want to make sure that I'm not clling you at some late hour. I am typing this at 6:11pm. Or I guess what time is it relative to Canada?

Since we're not China, we do have more than 1 time zone. You're 3 hours later than we are here out in the west. :M

These are old school engines, and there is nothing exotic about them. I see two options, which any decent mechanic can do. Hell, I could do them myself if I had somewhere other than a parking lot to do it.

1. Source a good used engine, swap it in. Our Delicas are almost all 4D56Ts, but the importers will know where to get a gas engine. Mitsubishi used these engines in lots of vehicles.

2. Remove the engine, strip it down, see what you need. Any automotive machine shop can handle the machine work (oversize pistons, undersize crank, etc.). Our importers should be able to handle the parts, but a Chrysler or Dodge dealer might be able to also. I'd check with the importers before committing to anything.

Either way will cost 4 figures with labour (are you up for this?), and will have your van off the road for several weeks.

Hi,
If you have a gas engine,it 's probably a 2.4l 4g64.This engine is in many Dodge Ram 50 from 1990-
1993 and Mitsubishi Mighty Max 1990-1996.Also,Hyundai had exactly the same engine,2.4l,in front-
wheel-drive layout,into Sonata from 1989 thru 1991.

If it's a 2.5l diesel 4d56,you can try to find Ford Ranger 1985-1987 turbo-diesel.The engine is a
Mitsubishi 4d55 that will fit in your van.The difference is that the 4d55 had a lower displacement,
2.3l(4d56=2.5l) and it had a bit less power(4d55=84hp 4d56=90hp).Torque is also lower.

You can also try to find a good 4d56(diesel) or 4g64(gas) from an importer.

Good luck.

There are different versions of the 4g64 a front wheel drive engine will not fit it is known as a narrow block approx 92 and after the engine used a 16 Valve single cam this engine will work with some mods but only out of a rear drive application
