importing a >25 year Delica to USA

Post by voner »

I have searched and searched for specific information on how to do this or if there are dealers that do this... but to no avail. To be clear -- I'm looking for information on how to purchase a greater than 25-year-old Mitsubishi delica into the usa...

Pointing me to specific websites would be great!

Thank you in advance.

As this is a Canadian site, nobody here is an expert on American regulations.
That said, my understanding of the American system is that older than 25 year old vehicles are allowed regardless of point of origin. I would recommend you contact US Customs to confirm process for bringing it across as there may be a form or 2 to fill out, but it should be a relatively straight forward process. (Be sure to advise them that you are bringing in a vehicle that falls under the 25 year exemption, because the answer is much different for newer vehicles)

I still so want one of these vehicles... I'm thinking of purchasing one in canada... putting it on a trailer and bringing it into washington... it would be garaged for the next 8 years or until it's 25 years old when I can license it legally here in the US...

I would drive it on the 4 ac we have... but not on public roads.

Since I'm retired I really don't have anyother worries other than a bill of sale at the boarder.... Right??

There is a member in Florida (RHpanda I think) who is driving his deli which he was able to import due to differences in state
laws. If you had a friend with a Fla. address maybe you could get around the problem. Once a vehicle is legal in one state
it might be easier to move within the country than bring it across the border direct? If not then its only 4 more years as there are a number of 89's up here I think. Good luck.

The way I understand it, importing a less-than-25-year vehicle is not so much the issue as registering it. There are plenty of Kei trucks being brought into the USA, but they're being used by hunters on non-public roads/lands.

You're importing it so you'll need something to prove it's older than 25 years old. You can't just slap on any vehicle on a trailer and bring it into your country be it US or Canada.

Here's the million dollar question :

What will you tell customs when they see you're hauling in a newer than 25 years old vehicle into the US on a trailer ?

That really does not work on customs people. The Skyline GT-R guys will tell you that. They have started to crack down on illegally registered cars.

With 25 and older I believe you still have to comply with the USA safety regulations and emissions for the year of manufacture. The difference is that you can bring it in without it being on the official list.

In Canada the issue is customs, however in the US it seems to be a registration thing (hence why so many vehicles seem to "slip through the cracks" down there)
If you don't register it for street use before it turns 25 I would think you should be ok, however as stated earlier, nobody on this site is an expert in the US system, you'd be best to contact US customs or a US registered importer before spending thousands of dollars on a vehicle that you can't use.
