Fuel Economy has tanked

Hello all,

I just picked up a 1993 SWB Pajero and can't help but feel like something is wrong. I'm currently only getting about 240 km's on a 50 L tank, which I feel is closer to the expected fuel economy of a soviet tank. I just replaced the air filter. Does anyone have any insights into what this could be?

Thanks!

Winter diesel , heavy foot and or maybe injectors We won't mention ip. I know my mileage has gotten worse because of injectors. Just can't afford a new set yet

Traditionally I use a Sakura air filter element. Once I tried a Fram element and got terrible mileage. I think the Fram paper filters out too much. Not sure which one you got but that could be a contributing factor.

Incidentally, I usually use LiquiMoly oil. One day it wasn't available, in fact for two oil changes ~ so I had to use Castrol. My city mileage went from 8.5 kliks to the litre down to seven. When I got the LiquiMoly back my mileage improved again.

Falco.

Winter diesel fuel economy for my L400 is 'meh' for me as well but I too noticed that when I switch to Mobil 0W30 synthetic for winter it mostly balances out even compared to my summer economy. I get 620-650 on 65 L in summer and that drops to under 550-600 in winter with normal oil and then 615-620 on syth. I know when I am in 4wd my fuel econ number dips under 500km per tank in winter but its cheaper than kissing curbs or other bumper deforming objects.

I change oil a bit more often in summer so don't run synthetic when its warm....just too expensive!

You are probably due for a fuel filter change and a good injector cleaning that only a sonic system can give justice to the job.

Something is definately wrong. My 94 Paj gets almost twice your mileage.

I'm a new 94 Pajero Diesel 2800 owner too... I also estimated my mileage should be in the 600-650 range, but am lucky to make 400km per tank... i think there is some issue with turbo or the EGR valve being removed and blocked off... in addition to injectors, oil and filters... anyone can recommend a good JDM Diesel shop or mechanic? in Chilliwack BC

Hello all, what is the best fuel economy you have seen for the 4M40 - 2800 diesel? I am curious - how well tuned my unit is and what I should be shooting for... I see lots of posts from 9.2KPL to 15KPL - but would like to know the reality.
thanks!
