Squealing Belts

Post by FredVenne »

Hello Everyone!

I had my timing belt changed (with water pump) in Nova Scotia and drove all the way to Banff, Alberta (nearly 6000km) with my Pajero (3.5 Petrol). Everything went fine until we got here with -35 temperature for over a week hehehe.
Since, one of the belt is squealing. At first it was only on start and now it squeals more unless I get on the Highway. If I turn the fan to high it squeals. So I assume it's the fan belt. But I'm only assuming.
My question is, when you have your timing belt changed, does it need (sometimes) an adjustment? If not, should I use to spray stuff from crappy tire?

Cheers!

Nevermind,

Just got an appointment at a mechanic. Don't want to take any chances.

The timing belt is toothed, so won't be the cause of your squeal, it's more likely the alternator/fan belt as you guessed. Turning the interior fan on high draws an electrical load, making the alternator do more work, and if the fan/alternator belt isn't tight enough it'll slip.

When they changed your timing belt did they fit new fan belts too? A new fan belt often needs a little re-tensioning once it's broken in.

Yes they did.

Will bring it in on Monday for a check up. It is pretty expensive to fix this truck. I don't want to wreck it for some small adjustment.

If you're near Airdrie, I can help you tighten your accessory belts. I'm assuming that you got all new accessory belts when you got your timing belt done? Don't use that belt dressing. Masks the problem instead of fixing it.
