Intro - the Search...
I've finally found one. And it was not without difficulty. I've been told that these are getting snatched up for export to Africa these days, so when the rare one shows up at auction, you are likely in competition to get it for something close to a reasonable price.

I watched for many months, intent on either the second gen k34t or the third gen k74t. Virtually. NOTHING showed up that I'd have even considered. Finally, one that I'd skipped at auction due to lack of pics/info surfaced at a reputable reseller, and William@jdmconnection was able to negotiate a fair deal for me. MORE than at auction, but the extra piece of mind from a thorough examination is worth it!

Just as an aside, this is the fifth JDM William has found for me in the last decade. There is no one better to trust for this process.

So now I'm waiting on shipping.

The details
-1992 Strada R quad cab 4x4 5 speed manual, 4D56 turbo diesel, 104,000 kms
-Graded 3-C at auction, based on peeling clear on hood/roof, and seats torn in the usual places on the vinyl sides...
-aside from these faults, it appears to be in decent shape,

Roofrack/basket, light bar, bull bar, rear bumper, side steps and rollbar are all in place. Tonneau bars and hooks are present, but cover is MIA. MOMO Evo steering wheel is swapped in, but has some damage, extent of which remains to be seen. Winter spec means two batteries, which is a help.

The plan...

This will be replacing my DD 2013 Lancer Sportback, so reliability is king. To that end, I'll be starting with maintenance. First up is timing and cooling. I've already bought all new belts, waterpump, all new filters, plus stat and rad cap. Still need to source upper and lower rad hoses. I'll also be changing all fluids in manual box, transfer box, f&r diffs, crankcase, and rad.

Going forward...
First off, I need to do something with the torn seats. I have some Recaro plans... 8-)

I've already bought an intercooler as was fitted to the pajero. I plan to top mount it, and use the add-on hood induction scoop from the k74 model. I'll also be adding boost and pyrometer gauges. Need to swap in a modern headunit: considering an in-dash android model. Down the road will be water-meth injection, a snorkel (if I can find one), gauge pod, 31" tires, etc.

Truck is now a day from landfall in BC. Then I'll have to get though customs, get shipping to Edmonton, pass an OOP, etc. In the mean time, I've got a 250w pad heater on the way for the oil pan. And a stereo harness. Waiting for black Friday sales before I get a head unit to wire it to.

The waiting is the hard part...

Somewhere in customs now, working its way through the system. Hope to meet it in a few weeks.

In the mean time, I bought it a Christmas gift...an android double DIN headunit.

Cleared customs. Being shipped in the next few days to Edmonton. OOP being done there, and then I'll go and get her. Looks like a deep freeze is heading for edmonton according to the long term forecast, when I plan to pick her up. I will be bringing items to account for contingencies. 8-)

Passed out of province with no deficiencies! Interior needs a good cleaning, and clear is delaminating from hood/roof but otherwise? Mechanically very sound, starts great in subzero temps, and had timing belt done 20k ago. Also, maintenance records since new in glove box. So... so far, so good!

First weekend with it was spent doing all accessory belts, rad hoses, thermostat, coolant, oil and filters, etc. Attached an engine pad heater. Replaced headlight bulbs.

This week I started on the inside... replaced dash center bezel (original cracked taking it out), installed an Android headunit, and swapped the worn out seats for some Pajero Evolution Recaros I just happened to have a second set of. Also installed a Pajero triple guage pod at the top of the dash.

Recaro compared to OE

Looks fantastic! Those fender flares really ad to the sporty look! I parked my Strada for the winter. I'll let my 10 year old subaru eat the salt. Only thing I would recommend is a new performance air filter and a little timing advance to pep it up. Is there a better feeling than getting a new vehicle and making it your own? Stay warm, Ralph in Winnipeg.

Last few weeks have been spent modifying the odo. LOL, in other words, putting miles on it! Now have 5000km on it since it landed in Canada, and this thing is a tank. Starts every morning, have gotten 10.0000 L/100km on the latest tank, and close to that on the others. Soon time for a second oil change. Otherwise, no real mods to report beyond removing some more of the stuff on the inside from the previous owner (extra cupholders, toll card machine, etc). Got paint for the hood, but haven't gotten to it yet. Plasti-dipped and re installed roof bars and basket. Adjusted a slightly slack throttle cable. Removed the tonneau cover hooks. Little things...

Bad squealing noise at 2500rpm, Turned out to be the AC belt tensioner. New bearing being sourced this week. Otherwise... oil change, and completely stripped the interior (again) to shampoo carpets, seats, mats. Even did the headliner. LOL. Have replacement sunvisors to replace my broken ones, and hub covers to dress up the wheels. Biggest mod this month though, is my rooftop tent! Test fitted it the other day.

That tent looks awesome! I've been looking at Stradas in Australia, called an L200/L300 there, and they have some cool upgrades.

Looking forward to getting mine on the road again come spring!
