Removal of interior to access crystal lite roof

Post by nxski »

I'm in the process of trying to repair the rust damage done by the cl roof set-up. I've done the removal and here are the pictures I took...

Next step is to sand / remove rust from inside and out, rust proof paint the interior, bondo, prime and hippo line the exterior and then put the interior back on. I'm still wondering however if I am to miss a spot of rust and then cover it with rust proof paint will the rust continue to spread or should the paint take care of that?
Thanks

Tips:

- make sure you unplug everything and move things that could potentially get in your way.
- keep a cellphone close in case you get stuck with the main light assembly on your head and need someone to help you
- use a ratchet instead of a screwdriver when possible so you don't strip the screws
- watch out for falling particles of rust, bugs and other debris
- fix your roof before problems start to arise and things will go much more smoothly
- watch how you swing metal objects around with so much glass nearby
- pay close attention to what you're doing and label everything
- use logic an common sense
- don't force anything

Removal was quite fast and easy and I was inside the whole time listening to music. Took me about 3-4 hours to get it all removed but should be faster if you know what you're doing. I'm a little concerned about being able to sand down all the rust from the inside and am hoping that if I miss a tiny bit here and there it won't be detrimental in the future. I get the feeling the worst it still to come. :?

Wow, there are quite a few spots...Do you actually see any rust spots from outside already or is it still all inside?
Glad I don't have a CL anymore 8-)

I do have some bubbles on the outside. I'm glad it's not as bad as most of the parts vehicles I've seen though. I still love the cl roof and I bought it knowing it had rust so I really shouldn't complain.

Thanks for posting this!

I have to get into the roof myself one of these days to repair one of the sunshade wires, this helps me understand the process a bit

Cheers

no mould, I do not see a market to sell them, not the time, space, or the skill to pull a mould (but before it is on I would loan it out for a week if someone wanted to pull a mould (I am out of the Province at the moment)).

Cheers
