Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Auto Transmission

Post by TallGuy »

Hello everyone,

Prior to an August road trip, I visited CVI Auto for a tune-up. Great service - thanks Butch. The transmission fluid was dark, so the filter was cleaned and the fluid changed. It was quite dark - black. I then went on a road trip to the interior. Upon my return, I changed the fluid again. Black. I have, since, changed the fluid out 4 times. It's been dark/dirty every time.

I have problems with 3rd and reverse. When in 3rd, under load, it'll slip back to 2nd. It seems like a slip - just not holding. When facing down any degree of hill, when I put it in reverse it seems to not engage until a little throttle is applied and then - clunk - into gear. Not good. With a fresh fluid change, 3rd gear seems to hold much better, but I have been flushing new fluid through now. I wonder, if I continue to flush new fluid through, will it clear up? A friend tells me that he thinks the belts are disintegrating.

I've had a discussion with Glen (vurv.ca), who experienced transmission problems earlier this year. He bought a used transmission and had it installed. $600. I am looking at $2k for an overhaul on mine.

Any suggestions? Any used transmissions around?

Cheers... J

Hey TallGuy,
Try searching for topics about shift down linkage, or shift down cable, etc... some guys have posted problems with this cable adjustment which cures their shifty transmissions.....check/fix the cheap stuff first is what I've gleaned from this site :-D :M

Continued dark/black fluid is usually a sign of breaking down clutchs. If you have to apply slight throttle to get it to move in reverse its either low fluid or the transmissions done.It sound like you need a reman/used transmission.Call/email CC Autos they usually have them in stock.

Thanks for the info...
Kick-down linkage adjusted with some positive results - she shifts more definitively. However, even after adding some Lucas additive and letting that settle, there remains some slip from 3rd to 2nd under load. My thought is to let it ride with careful driving until any more gears start to go, then replace with a used assembly.
Cheers... J.
