Bull Bar paint job prep.

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Bull Bar paint job prep.

Post by Kinl »

I'm at the point where I really need to sort out the rust spots on my Bull bars, I think I'm going to try the Rustoleum/Tremclad treatment, but should I take the bars to get sand blasted for a lasting job? and is there anywhere you can recommend on the North Shore/Vancouver that will do this?

Thanks

Ah cool, Thanks... I'd Googled blasting and came up with Langley U-Blast, sounds like a plan! :)

I was also considering a whole paint job with Rustoleum/Tremclad after seeing a few videos online... is it a good idea? rollers or spray? It doesn't need to look amazingly glassy just needs to be practical and last plus not cost me an arm and a leg.

after you blast it, tremclad, rustoleom, etc.. will stick like glue.

just be sure to use a mild grease remover/acetone before you paint it.

a good shot of air to blow away the small sand particles will do good as well

When I did the bullbars on my bus, I wire wheeled as much of the paint and rust off as I could, then brused on a coat of Plasti cote rust inhibitor (comes in a black bottle, is green and smells like poo). after that, tremclad anti rust primer and tremclad hammer coat.

I did it in 2008 on my march break during a week of intermittent rain (the first day was beautiful, the rest of the time was crap! It would stop raining, I would run outside, wipe the water off the parts, paint, and hoped the paint could dry a bit before it rained again) Despite the less than ideal painting environment, the bullbar never grew new rust and the hammer finish looked badass!

Well took them to John at U-Blast and he convinced me to have them powdercoated over at Hi-Pro around the corner from U-Blast... So I guess they're going to look awesome and I'm not going to get shouted at off the wife for messing them up...

Having said that I've done some tests on the plastic with the EZ liner and I quite like the more robust look.. seems to stick pretty good too after a clean and sand, so I guess theres still a chance i'll mess things up ;)

Did you sand blast your bull bars at Langley U-blast? I just phoned and the woman there told me their booths are too small to fit the bull bars.

They have a big booth for larger things that they will blast for you.

They're still holding up strong and look great... same goes for the EZ liner, I've gained a few more rock chips in my body paint on the front but the Plastic EZ linered part on the front doesn't have a single blemish.
