seperated crank pulley

Has anyone out there in delica land experienced this....
Started off as a Terrible squeal and fluctuating voltage..Must be Alt belts....
As I started tearing in I realized the Alt Pulley on the Crank pulley appears to have completly seperated!!
The Alt Pulley appears to be bonded on or a interference fit over a rubber band around the crank pulley???
Now the Alt Pulley bore is oversized or the rubber is worn out...the loosness between the two is I guestamate over 3/32nds....wow.
Has anyone out there experienced this?
As soon as my phone charges I will take a pic of the crank pulley....

I had a crankshaft pulley bolt shear off on my Mighty Max and the crankshaft pulley bolt come loose on my L300 but never what you're describing. Any ideas on what sorts of repairs will be needed to remedy?

common thing for the rubber on a harmonic balancer to let go...not necessarily common to the L300. years + oil ect they go

Basically you just need to swap in a new harmonic balancer (some motors the balancer is also specifically balanced to the motor), also add a new crank key, and crank bolt and make sure you torque it to specs...

Good time to change v-belts

Pretty sure I need a replacment crank pulley...
It sort of looks like the Two pulleys were cast as one but the wall thickness at seperation point cant be more then .025 or less...real thin.
Temp repair initiated...
so far wrapped a layer of vinyl tape around crankpulley to take up the gap and now attempting to drill a hole through alt pulley groove into crankpulley and pinning it with maybe a .rivet...

Temp repair on hold...
Thanks for the input...
Looks like every thing lines up but I am now hesitating....I think your right this is going to be right out of balance and prob cause more prob with stress to crankshaft...

Crank pulley = harmonic balancer

it is a two pieces of metal with rubber between...it removes any harmonic vibration that builds in the motor to keep the crank from failure.

Almost all motors run them and with time the do separate...just need to pull and replace.

again check the 5d56 is not balanced externally on the balancer (I would be surprised if it was), change the key on the crank and the crank bolt....

Thanks a lot I appreciate the help :-D
Well I need a new harmonic balancer....
And I will do some research in respect to the dynamic balance of it...

Oh it happens often, and can cause all sorts of trouble, change it and check the crank and woodruff key slot for damage, new woodruff key, and use a new bolt too.

Different in this time...it sounds like it did not come loose on the crank but the balancer came apart, so should be no crank damage in this case....

Superexcedded might be parting a L300 or you might want to go new

I'd still check it though, if it's been vibrating or being pulled side to side, its always worth a look.

Hi Cuz'n Dennis,
yup, the balancer pulley rubber centre part can crack and die with old age (symptom is constant vibration even at idle, as long as engine running). I got a new one last year, but Edwin of CVI installed it so I don't know what the install technique is. I got the part from RockyMountainImports.net

To be sure we are talking the same thing, this is the thing that looks like a clothes line pulley, from my memory maybe 6 inches across, super heavy, with a rubber insert kind of like a bulls eye target circle. It is located somewhere lower engine, and the main belt runs thru it (not JUST the airconditioner belt). I have that old one in the basement, as it wasnt completely disintegrated, for an emergency spare.

My Russek manual says for removal: "Counterhold the crankshaft against rotation and slacken the crankshaft pulley bolt. Remove the crankshaft pulley, using 2 tyre levers, placed under the pulley at opposite sides. Take care not to damage other parts.". However, for reinstall, the manual goes on for pages as it tells you how to rebuild entire engine.

But I think this is the part you want: page 72
Section 1.4.5 Balance Shafts (Deisel Engine) (I skip a page of tiny details)
-Fit the oil pump. Take care to align the key groove in the pump driven gear with the Woodruff key in the balance shaft. Check that the key remains in position after the pump gearwheel is fitted. Tighten the oil pump securing bolts and then the balance shaft and driven gear securing bolt. The oil pump can also be fitted to the balance shaft before the shaft is inserted into the cylinder block.
-Fill the oil pump with at least 10cc engine oil.
-Lubricate the bearing journals with engine oil and insert the L.H.balance shaft into the cylinder block without damaging the bearing bush.
-The remaining operations are carried out as already described.

HUUHHH??? Already described Mr.Russek says, well I dunno, maybe I should scan to you the 10 pages or so, teensy tinsy print, and each pages has both diesel and petrol paragraphs so is not the easiest step by step. PM me your home email as the scans will be huge files.

Cheers Christine L.

Thanks Everyone for your help!!
Pretty sure this is not an Mitsu Approved Repair but I managed to Temporarly Pin the Alt Pulley back to the crank pulley(Harmonic balancer) with two countersunk screws 180 apart.Put Everything back together and were on the road again!!
I thought it would be grossley out of balence...and maybe it is...but so far no squealing or noticable change in vibration....

I would still be inclined to swap in another on... The vibration it balances are small harmonic ones that can build in the rotating mass on you....not the vibrations you will fill, but the ones that could cause cracks and failures in the crank (at least that is my understanding on what it does, but I have been wrong before)

Thanks,Yes I know its Temporary..... I am Definetly am not leaving it like this!! I agree with you 100% its now out of balance and the screws are now most likley bypassing the isolator function of the rubber and transfering Vibrations...Also the timing mark has moved since its on the Alt pulley (If i remember correctly).I just purchased a parts van and am on the way this afternoon to pick it up.Hopefully it has a decent harmonic balancer or I will be ordering a new one. :-D
You guys have been so much help!!!

I've been in this same spot, except that mine came right apart, blew all the belts and overheated. I got very lucky in that no head damage resulted, but realize what can come of this if it fails. A new balancer is a couple of hundred $$. Good to replace the key and the bolt as well, and make sure it is torqued properly - not an easy task with an automatic.

Good luck
