A/T Light troubleshooting

Post by Triumph73 »

On the weekend I had the A/T light come on. We had been doing a couple hours off-road 4H engaged and slow moving. The engine temp was quite high as well, but parked for 5 min or so everything went back to normal. I know the transmission oil is also cooled through the radiator at the bottom, so a high coolant temp would also heat the transmission oil.

Here is my question. I noticed the light now stays on for a few seconds once I start, and it never did this before. I checked the oil level and it is good. Is there something else I should be checking?

If tranny fluid gets too hot the light turns on. This is a warning of course and normal. I wish more vehicles had this.

The L400 has another Tranny Fluid cooler on the left front corner just behind the grill. Its accessible through the left wheel well once you removed the inner liner. Check to see that its not plugged with mud/bugs/dirt. Water sprayed from a garden hose with your thumb over the hose end gives a gentle enough spray so as not to damage the fins but still strong enough to dislodge dirt. Spray from behind to push dirt out the way it went in.

You might condider doing the same with your radiator.

Check that your clutch fan (water pump) is working properly. Youtube has some generic videos on how to check a clutch fan. Make sure your belts have proper tension.

Check your coolant level in the overflow tank and its strength with a hydrometer.

check for odd smells(burnt) and darkening of the tranny fluid. This is an indicator that the viscosity has been affected and it should be changed.

The last item to check is the temp sensor connection on the tranny. Near the tranny pan.

Mine stays on for a second. Always has but only at a cold start.
Yeah I joined the Dark Side because the medical plan is top shelf!

Thanks for the advice.

I checked the coolant, and the tranny fluid still looks good in color and smells normal.

I will look at the other radiator, and your other suggestions.

I think I'm just being an over protective parent....haha.... it's my first warning light.
