Which ATF fluid in Canada?

Considering a transmission oil flush. Car is 20 years old (1998 gasoline model), though only covered 15,000 kms. Full maintenance history and it doesn’t look like it ever had a tranny flush.

What oils are approved that I can get in Canada - and should I even be doing this at 15,000 kms? (what about the filter? seems expensive...)

There’s a bit of hesitations when shifting gears so I’m just wondering if a flush is warranted or not.

I went to one mechanic (leaving names out here) who wanted something like $400 for a filter + THREE tranny flushes (he insisted the "wrong oil" was in the gearbox, which is odd, since it was OEM! and I don't know why THREE. He wanted $160 for each flush). I went to another, much further away one, who drove it and said yeah there's some hesitation in the gears, but it's because it's been parked for extended periods of time, so you just need to drive the poor thing.

Have been driving it for a couple weeks since and the shifting has improved noticeably. So I think I'm not going to do a flush for now after all. But yes, I would still like to get an answer for the eventual flush.

I think the Mitsubishi Montero might have the same transmission, and from what I've read, it was sold in North America. So I'd check and see if they do actually have the same transmission, and then look at what fluid that uses. When my Delica arrives I'll be flushing and changing all of the fluids, including the transmission fluid, so I've been starting to find locally available parts and fluids I can use.

Thanks. That’s a good idea - I will check that. The car has been running beautifully over the last few months (and the shifting has been great) - it made it cross Canada without a hitch (with some off-roading in between) and I’m now preparing to winterise it. As it has absolutely zero rust, I want to do something before the salt and the slush hit ...

I have read to use ATF dexron or dexron II fluid. Can probably buy a many different stores depending on location.

OEM ATF is ATF SPIII. Available at Lordco.

I have access to OEM parts for L300 and L400, please drop a line if interested.
