After doing some minor work to my engine I've noticed a loud engine rattle while driving ONLY between 1500-2000 rpm. Has been doing it for about 2000 km, but no other symptoms.
Doesn't do it in neutral, so its difficult to tell where its coming from in the engine but sounds like the driver's side.
I've looked online and some people have said perhaps the timing chain is loose or guides are worn, or it could also be the harmonic balancer...
Anyone else had this problem with their L400?

What engine work did you do? Did this only begin to occur following the repairs?

...and are all your screwdrivers/wrenches accounted for?TRUTHautomotive wrote:What engine work did you do? Did this only begin to occur following the repairs?
Rattling at one specific frequency makes me think of something loose that's shaking around. An engine cover, heat shield, or stray tool. It would be unusual for the balancer or timing chain to suddenly start rattling loud enough to hear, they usually start off so quietly you think you're being paranoid.
Nothing says "poor workmanship" more than wrinkles in the duct tape.

Check your main drive shaft. Might need balancing or the UJoints done.Avittery wrote:After doing some minor work to my engine I've noticed a loud engine rattle while driving ONLY between 1500-2000 rpm. Has been doing it for about 2000 km, but no other symptoms.

For me it was the u joint. They have been replaced and she now runs smooth. They are the same as the u joint on the montero.
