CADA lobbyist

Post by peak »

Hi all:

I'm quite new to the RHD world but am very interested in the CADA issue and their attempt to increase the import rule to 25 years for RHDs.

I noticed on the federal lobbying reporting website that CADA has hired a lobbyist and has had a pre-budget meeting a few weeks ago with the federal minster of transport and others. This is a big concern that I think that goes well beyond their previous media effort. I think the real issue for CADA is keeping as many quality lower priced imports as they can off the road, and it has nothing to do with "safety." I think making this a 'kitchen table' issue of how we're getting screwed on car prices in Canada might be a good way to go.

I am considering sending out emails to a number of MPs on the issue but wanted to run this by the Delica Canada community first in case this is a duplication of someone else's efforts (please post if there is another email campaign going on).

This is the message that I am thinking of sending to the MPs listed below and to my own MP:

____

RE: CADA lobbying

The Canadian Automobile Dealers Association (CADA) has retained a professional lobbyist, Huw Williams, to lobby Transport Canada for changes in regulations on vehicle imports, specifically to:
“Review the 15 year age limit exclusion for the prescribed classes of vehicles that can be imported without needing to comply with Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (CMVSS). The Canadian Automobile Dealers Association is seeking an extension of that exclusion to 25 years.” [https://ocl-cal.gc.ca/app/secure/orl/lr ... 4662216280]

This extension will only serve to keep vehicle prices higher in Canada. The recent Senate report on the price gap in Canada highlights CADAs and vehicle manufacturers desire to keep vehicle prices high in Canada (http://www.scribd.com/doc/124209040/The ... -price-gap).

I do not believe that introducing changes to transport regulations that result in keeping vehicle prices higher in Canada is in alignment with current government principles or objectives.

CADA is seeking to keep vehicle prices higher in Canada, and I urge you not to support this effort.

Sincerely,

….

Those guys are probably much more concerned about Mexican cars. We can soon import 10 year old mexican cars, and going down by a year each year after that. This will be a backdoor way to import a flood of cool and unique cars. See the above link. The 15 year old Japanese imports will be a nothing but a pimple on a bee.

Having said that, this is still an interesting development.

They would have to get NAFTA changed in order to exclude Mexican vehicles...

And to the original poster, you're correct - this has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with safety, and everything to do with you and me being hog-swindled into buying new, over-priced cars. I just bought a used truck and saved nearly 30,000$. Two years old and it's lost that much 'value'? If that seems excessive, it's because it is!

Brand new full-sized pickups with 'free' diesel engines (worth 9-11,000$ depending on company)? Kinda tells ya the vehicle might be over-priced in the first place, eh?
