New ICBC "survey" question

Post by jwfchase »

Recently got back from renewing the insurance on our LHD VW Golf. During the renewal I was asked by the agent (@BCAA), "Is this a right hand drive vehicle?"

I replied, "No... is this some kind of survey?"

She responded that ICBC plans to ask everyone this question over the next year for a "study" to determine if RHD vehicles are involved in more accidents. I hope in their wisdom that they will be studying all the factors involved in these accidents... RHD's may be involved with more than their fair share of accidents, but if they are I'll bet it's not the fact they are RHD's that cause the accident (I'm thinking of the increasing # of Skylines, etc being driven by 18-19 yr old males...). Somehow I have the feeling I may be giving ICBC too much credit by referring to ``in their wisdom`` though...

While your Golf is a LHD, it is an import (as ALL VW are at this time), so ICBC is asking the RHD-question only on the basis of your vehicle being an import.

It seems their computers are not smart enough to determine a Japanese VIN, or a BC-assigned-VIN, or vehicles that are older than 15 years, or those that were imported in just the past couple of years, or, or, or...

That's what happens when you get caught telling 'porky pies'!

They put it in last year since there are both LHD and RHD imports flocking in.

Has nothing to do with the 'accident study' since that accident study was conducted by ICBC and proven to be false.

It's to determine that the import is LHD or RHD.

Anything to do with them trying to find out if RHD cost more to repair (if accident)? That would make more sense as a "business"...

It looks like we are 'looping' as we discussed this 'study' recently:

http://www.delica.ca/forum/encouraging- ... light=icbc
I mentioned this before but nobody noticed that: the friend of mine who is working in ICBC head office is involved in that 'study' and what I got as a response on my answer was a smile and 'Yes, we are working on it to increase the company profit'. As an additional 'bonus' I was informed that this was not the only project aiming the same target they are working on.
ICBC and wisdom? Give me a break!

We used to have a saying back in the '60's & '70's ~ it involved certain farmyard animals at the trough ~ the Pink Floyd wrote a song about it, once. In previous generations they referred to them as "stuffed shirts".

I have every respect for people that get into a governmental job for the betterment of the common wealth. That is noble. I love my country. But I am not so sheepish as to think that they are all so good willed ~ sometimes one must call a spade "a shovel", as it were. I like to do business with people I know, that I can talk to. I tend to care less for those who hide behind facades. You will know them by their tools.

I would like to ask someone who is going for an insurance renewal to answer 'No' on the RHD question. I am curious what the agent's reaction would be. I really want to play this game but I have to wait until November.

When I went to renew the insurance on the bushbunny, the agent (company I've dealt with for years and years) asked if it was a right hand drive, when I said yes, she said "really?? I've never had anyone say yes to that question!". She seemed quite intrigued, but didn't know why she was asking the question in the first place!

:-D :-D :-D Actually I am curious if they have your vehicle tagged as RHD but still asking the question. 'Is it RHD or LHD?' - 'It is LHD.' - 'Are you sure?' - 'Why?' - 'Because our system says it is RHD.' - 'Why are you asking then?'

I got that same response when I renewed my Celica's insurance a month and a bit ago.

What would they do if they have a vehicle with a center driving position. There are a few of them.

I was waiting for a couple of those to show up - someone in the Lower Mainland got one? A mini-truck or a mini-car? I can just hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth over those: "And the driver, can you believe it, is right in the MIDDLE of the car! I mean really, how can one drive from the middle of the car? And what about blind spots? Well, there must be TWO of them now! Driver probably can't see a damned thing, sitting there in the middle of the car." :?
