Need Insurance in Ontario for Delica/RHD...Look no further!

Post by nvanadm »

Thanks to some leads from "Bonsai", I was talking with two different insurance companies here in London, Ontario. The first quote I got was from a Company called Preferred Insurance who could only insure the Delica seperate from my wife's car and our home insurance. It was going to be with a company called Nordiq...terrible price as well. $2400/yr, $205/month!!

The second lead was for Allstate. We were able to get both vehicles and home insurance all together. Took only a couple days to sort everything. The Delica is going to be $1100/yr, or $91/month (couple bucks cheaper per month from the previous insurance I had here in Ontario until they sent a letter saying they weren't going to insure it anymore). I'm 29 years old, no claims, driving since 16 etc...

So, if you live in Ontario and need insurance on your Deli, call Jay Winters at Allstate

Good to read you found a 'reasonable' company to deal with. It's too bad so many of them have been drinking from the koolaid bowl the FUD-crowd has been putting out.

Happy driving! And no claims!

Well - you lucked out then my friend because your contact Jay just told me that Allstate will NOT insure anymore RHD's, period. This just came out last week.

I tried about a month ago with Allstate here in Kingston and they told me the same thing, no RHD policies anymore.

Im 38, been driving since I was 16, no claims, no tickets so its not me or my driving habits.

I cant tell you how pissed off I am that Im paying $2200 a year for insurance on a freakin 93 van.

If anyone, anyone at all in Ontario can provide me with any confirmed cheaper insurance options please let me know.

Thanks

So... what are you guys going to do about this? If they feel this way about RHDs then how do they feel about left handed people? Or for that matter ~ people who are not of the Aryan race? Like ~ where does it stop? A lane is a lane. LHD or RHD. You will always have blind spots.

I had one guy go off on me about how dangerous it was for a RHD vehicle to make a left hand turn at an intersection. I asked the guy if he had ever driven a RHD vehicle? His reply was of course not, he would never drive such a dangerous vehicle. So I asked him how would he know that they are dangerous if he had never driven one... this is where the truth comes out..... he read about it. So I asked him: When you approach an intersection in your LHD vehicle and you have to make a right hand turn ~ how do you do it without running over that pregnant mother and all her children standing on the corner?

The bad guys are trying to usurp the rights of a Canadian ~ remember? The True North, Strong and Free? Do you think it will stop at RHDs?

First post here so hope I can help out....

My Paj is insured with Gore Mutual thru a broker here in Sarnia.
I pay the SAME premium as my wifes car (2010 Mazda 3) so it's not cheap.
The wifes is 1020/yr I think, and the Paj is 1070.
The Paj is insured for appraised value though - $12,500.

Not sure if Gore is still doin RHD's but it's worth a shot, they've been good to me so far.
Hope it sticks cause this insurance fiasco is getting rediculous.

You know what ? Its hit and miss here in this backwards Province and it all depends if your lucky or unlucky enough to talk to a "professional" that particular day. I went through a Broker at the start of this, a Broker who specialized in getting RHD Insurance and ended up hearing the old "our policy just changed this week, if you had called yesterday we could have taken you.
Whatever. I settled with Facility Insurance, for $2200 a year, and this was the best price a "Broker" could get me. Well, after sitting (and paying) for this policy close to a month I finally got pissed off at paying these high rates I decided to start calling more Insurance companies on my own behalf.
Well, after about 5 hours or so on the phone I finally got someone who said if I can get an appraisal done ($200) they should be able to insure it. I figured I might as well get the appraisal done and send it in. Low and behold, a week later, I called back for a follow up and I was informed that it was no problem. So now Im paying $565 a year for full coverage vice $2200, WTF. Im not complaining (now) but come on. Of course I grabbed the policy and proceeded to call my so called "Broker" to tell them to stick thier Facility Insurance policy where the sun dont shine.

Long story short, If you live in Ontario and have a RHD call around to every freakin Insurance company / Broker in the Province until you exhaust all resources and then call some more.

There is still cheap full coverage Insurance here, you just need to be lucky that day. Get the appraisal as well, its worth it. I'm with Personal Insurance now but calling them wont do you any good because like I said, it all depends on the day of the week, the person your talking to, if the planets are lining up, if its garbage day, etc, it really is hit and miss.

Are people having issues with only full coverage policies ? What about just liability coverage ?

There was only about $100 price diff between full coverage and just liability through Facility Insurance. Currently, Im paying an extra $80 for full coverage.

Its not a matter of just getting liability, its a matter of the vehicle being RHD and who takes your call that day when you want a quote.

Its a HUGE headache.

Im off to eat Turkey.

A lane is a lane. RHD has no physical relevance on the matter. RHD has blind spots, true. But guess what? LHD also has blind spots. The great thing about RHD is when you look over your shoulder you get a much better, panoramic view, where with LHD POV the B pillar is a much bigger issue. People sometimes ask me: "Falco, how do you make a left turn in your RHD vehicle without slaughtering innocent bystanders?" and I tell them that I use a similar technique as LHD vehicles making a right turn without mounting the curb and running over dozens of pregnant mothers and their babies. Simple, really.

Drive accordingly.

remember, your dealing with Insurance / Broker companies here in Ontario, they DONT listen to logic, they function, they don't think. You can tell them you will only drive the vehicle 1 km a year and that you have never been in an accident and have had your drivers for 40 years, it don't matter. I proved it. 2200 a year down to under 600 a year. I bet if I called the company Im with now and asked for a quote tomorrow I would be told, sorry, no RHD polices anymore. Its crazy.

Then remind them of the Constitution Of Canada, in particular the Canadian Charter Of Rights And Freedoms. There is a section there regarding "Discrimination". Do they feel they are above the law? Is the law there to protect Canadian citizens or is it to protect the corporations?
