L400 poor mileage

Post by RichD »

Okay my turn to ask a question. I have a LWB L400 and the mileage is not even coming close to our L300. To be honest I'm still pretty noobish with the L400. We barely put 1000km a month on it so I'm still getting acquainted.

Last fill: 63L for 424km, mixed (more than 50% highway).

Starts are fine, no smoke, power seems good to me but I have not driven any other 4M40-based vehicles so what do I know?

So far (before this last fill) I've done:

- fresh air filter
- reduced tire size to 235/75R15
- replaced the stock hubs with manual (to reduce road load) implying brakes checked, bearings repacked, rotors resurfaced
- replaced inner/outer tie rods (they were worn)
- alignment, tire pressure

In the next week I already plan to:

- get injectors cleaned
- request an adjustment on the IP, perhaps fuel too rich?
- inquiring about timing adjustment, not much info about this yet
- install 2-1/4" exhaust
- complete fluids flush/change

Can anyone comment on their mileage with a LWB so I can have a reference point? What has worked for you?

That's 14.86 L/100km

Average is 11/12 L/100km

I went through 4 tanks with Pistachio and averaged 12ishL on gas buddy. Going back all our L400's averaged around 12L.

you've got the list down. nothing to add. once it's all done. burn through 2 tanks and report back to the bridge Number 1 !

Hey Rich-

I can only speak from my experience but I have had tanks that are absolutley garbage and I have had some great ones. I too take very good care in doing all the maintenance to ensure I am getting what I can out of it, but just sometimes I get crappy results. I have been plotting my fuel on Fuelly.com since getting my IP redone and you can see the definate peaks and valleys on the chart, althoug most of the time I am only doing partial fill-ups. Sometimes when it is ball-freezing cold of I do alot of racing the big rigs I get really crappy tanks. My average is 13.7L/100km but I have had some as low as 11.5 and as high as 16.7. From what you are saying it seems to be normal from my perspective, having only owned my L400 for a year.

Here is a link to my Fuelly:
http://www.fuelly.com/driver/cregan/delica
Just click on the bottom of the chart to show all fuel ups.

Can I be Ensign Crusher? Although, with my apparent rage issues (I swear at tools and inanimate objects alot!) I guess Warf would be a better fit :-)

Um thanks for the opinion I already got from you Jesse. :-P I was kind of hoping some other members might post their mileage, if that's okay with you.

Really all I want is to get more than 420 parsecs before replacing dylithium crystals!

You are dismissed Numbah Wahn.

P.S. Thanks for the great info Cregan. I hope more post data like this; that's what I was really looking for!

Fuelly tells me 12.9l/100 km all time:

The big spike in February was before I fixed the EGR. I was suffering from lack of power and lots of smoke. I'm also running 265/70/15's, which doesn't help the mileage any.

I keep a log book, I have not yet taken the time to take the data in the logbook and compile it into an overall set of stats like Cregan. I keep procrastinating on that. However, having the logbook next to me as I type this - I can say that I get between 400-550 km per tank, depending on driving. Of late my total distance per tank has dropped to about 360 km - but this is due to a seized front right caliper that I am about to get replaced.

Note, when I say "depending on driving" I have done some very fast highway miles, and those drop me down to the 400 range. I also live near Mt. Rainer, and the hills knock off a good portion of that as well. 580km on a tank is my best ever 360km (seized caliper) is my worst.

Wish I could compile this into more significant data for you, but I don't have the time to run all the numbers (mixing US Gallons and Liters as well...)

I pretty faithfully enter my fill ups in an iPhone app called Road Trip. (cool)

It says that since I bought my 94 LWB400 34,000 km ago, my average is 12.44L/100km.
Close to even split city/hwy
Best was around 10 and worst around 15.5

I don't do any maintenance except oil and filter changes on time, but I only have 85,590 km on it.

Fuelly.com does that all for you...you can switch back and forth between Litres and Gallons easily...while keeping your distance in Kms. My wife's family lives in the US so we are back and forth quite often. Very handy feature!

L400 poor mileage

Post by lettereleven »

I am not sure how accurate it is, but when I went through Aircare last week, they said I got 16.5 L /100km. Based on my last couple of tanks that seems right.

I too have just done an IPA burn, new air filter, good tire pressure and alignment.

This is true.

It's not an apples to apples comparison. But it gives some information at the other end of the spectrum.

So I have only had my SWB for a few of weeks but here are my last 2 tracked fill-ups:

70% city I got 15.2L/100km
30% city I got 12.8L/100km

After a few years, I average 11.5-12L/100klm highway (110 indicated, on slightly larger then stock BF Goodrich AT KO's), and 13.5L 100km/city. L400 Auto, blocked EGR, boost increased to 12psi.
