L400 Oil Pressure Sensor THREAD PITCH

Mitsubishi Delica L400 production commenced in 1994 -- After much anticipation, the L400 arrived on Canadian Soil in 2009!

L400 Oil Pressure Sensor THREAD PITCH

Post by psilosin »

I want to use the location of the oil pressure sensor to install a manifold for a gauge and bypass filter. I have conflicting reports of what the thread pitch is. Fishtank told me it is 1/8 BRITISH pipe thread (which looks rare both in town and online) and other posts I have seen indicate it is a metric thread (like everything on my Toyotas and makes more sence coming out of Japan). I would like a definative answer so I can order what I need...once. :-) Maybe CCauto or RSI or anyone who has changed the oil pressure sensor enough times to have been curious enough to confirm the thread pitch has the answer??

Just damnit because the same thing in NPT or Metric is like $3 and in every auto shop in town. BSP is special order. Cheapest adapter I have spotted so far is the Autometer 2269 [http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ATM-2269/].

Yeah agreed. All of my aftermarket probes end up costing about 20-30$ in fittings alone.

Are you Lower Mainland? I'm going to bring some of these in for kits anyway, you can have one.

Alas I am over in the Okanagan but thanks for the offer. I have to order some hose and other connectors etc so I'll likely get that one from summit. What kind of kit are you putting together...oil pressure?

I hate to say it but... I told you so. :-D

No need to order a new fitting psilosin, just get a 1/8th BSP die and run it onto the 1/8th NPT male fitting. There is a slight thread pitch difference and the die will take care of it nicely. Trust me on this one.

Let me know if you need help finding one, I may be able to hook you up.

Cheers.

I spent all day yesterday looking for this info, and didn't get it to spit out of the search for some reason...

I'm off to the hydraulics shop tomorrow to see what adapters cost (once I figure out the size of the transmission cooler lines).

G'day
Yep the Oil pressure sensor is 1/8 BSPT.

I'm 90% the way through a Oil Bypass filter + Oil pressure sensor + Oil Temp sensor install.

I have used steel Hydraulic fittings from Ryco, through a local supplier.
http://www.ryco.com.au/
It looks as if they have a Canadian office / distribution.

I have avoided brass fittings as the engine is a high vibration environment, and steel is much less likely to fatigue and fail. ... something to consider when dealing with the life blood of your engine.

There is some compatibility between NPT and BSP. I have screwed the VDO gauge sensors with NPT thread into the steel BSPT fittings OK with a thread sealant. (Still to have the ultimate test of use and time but I think it will be all OK).

Another option as a oil take off point (on a 4M40T) is the supply to the vacuum pump at the block end. The banjo bolt at the vacuum pump which has the oil pressure switch screwed into it, has the same geometry as the plain banjo blot at the block end. I have purchased one of these banjo bolts with 1/8 BSPT thread in the end of it from Mitsubishi ($36AU mind you!), and it fits OK at the block end, and hence this is where I'm going to take the supply for the Bypass Oil filter etc.

A word of caution here... the turbo also is fed oil from the block using an other oil pipe and same size banjo fittings, However ! one of these banjo blots has a reduced feed orifice (about 1.5mm dia.) to meter the amount of oil to the turbos bearings. I don't know which end this "metering" banjo bolt is fitted, but the up shot is that if you look to tap into this oil source do so with caution. I believe, from reading other car forums that if a full flow banjo blot is fitted in place of the metering one, oil is forced passed the bearings into the exhaust/intake passages resulting in a lot of smoke!

Cheers
Ben :-D
