where do i stop

Post by prairie_pirate »

hey just looking for some imput here. I picked up a 400 and have been going threw everything before winter. I am putting in an oil catch can intercooler pipeing, coolant res tank. I took the intake and intercooler off and cleaned them. the intake was so grungy. So my problem is looking into the intake ports they are so dirty its scary. Iam thinking i should pull the head and clean it too. then i would also do the timing chain and water pump. It has 140k km its a 94 lwb high roof. Oh i will be an egr blank as well. What does everyone think.

STOP!!!

With the EGR blanked and a catch can, intake gunk will work its way out on its own. You could try and seafoam the air side (VERY CAREFULLY, I have a post about it somewhere), or do a water injection setup.

At this point though, I'd be looking at the battery/glow plugs/relay/alternator and making sure all of that is tip top. Also installing a block or coolant heater.

i did read the sea foam post i was thinking about it as i have a few cans. i just installed a block heater and the previous owner did glow plugs. i am still looking into a inline heater. i am waiting on a new battery tray so i might replace them as well. thanks for the imput. should i just wait till the timing chain sounds like a steam engine. i like to keep things tip top.

unless you're planning on putting 150,000km's on your L400 within a year, replacing the timing chain is a waste of money and time.

Look familiar? Its a diesel.. They tend to look that way, sounds like you are like me. Unsure of something replace it! But there is a point you must realise its not a space ship... Its a diesel. Removing the PCV dump into your intake and EGR will stop that from happening, they are engineered to run with those so even dirtier then it is. It will work its way out eventually and be fine.

I did SeaFoam my crank the other day and it is running much smoother. (Oil change right after running it through)

i noticed some rust bubbles just infront of the lh front suspension mount so i picked at it and realised the frame rail had some rot. yikes..... so pulled out the plasma and boxed that section of the frame. then took a small side grinder and cleaned up the wheel well. repacked the axles with new boots. new disks new bushings now just have to paint the new calipers and put the wheels on then to tend to some rust on the rear frame by the rh wheel. its crazy because there is no rust on the van it just seams these two spots had spots missed in the seam sealer where the water could get in side the frame.
