What's going on with my valves? Not a clue what style they are ( shim under bucket, hydraulic etc) and when is/ adjustment needed for lash?

you dont need to adjust the valve for L400 as its hydraulic lifter.

Thanks Mardy... I was curious cus when it's cold... -5to -10 if I don't let it warm up for a minute it will stumble slightly... Which makes sense for a diesel of this technology. Do you agree? I'm new to IDI injection lol :)

hi, yes, evan,
also you need to adjust the cold start valve to higher rpm up to 900rpm to make it smoother.
then when its hot it will settle to the proper idle will turn smooth. that was i notice thru my experience dealing with this L400 4m40.
also do chnage the oil all the time good oil. pls dont used 0/40 it it might destroy your engine; 5w40 is ok for deisel.

Yah I have 5 40 in it and change every 4000 km... Where is the cold start adjustment? I thought it was controlled buy ambient tempature?

Well got at the cold start valve this morning and gave it about a 1/4 turn and we will see how it pans out over the next couple of days :-)

Ps you need small hands not meat paws like mine to get at it! i have been working on big stuff for to long!

So I have now turned it 1-1/4 turns and no effect on idle... Is this normal?
