just a short update, changed the oil for our trip to florida (about 11K since the last change from mardy, we did the bypass 1K after). got a hose attachment for oil sample, just turn in till the oil starts to flow out then unscrew to stop it. changed the mitsu and kleen oil filter, added some amsoil ame 15w40 synthetic and voila. also dropped a can of seafoam in the crank case before changing the oil.

should get my analysis back by this thursday, lookin forward to seeing the results! then i'll do another oil sample to see how far i can stretch the filter.

Is 10k km the regular intervall to change both filters for your system?
With the Trabold filter you shouldn't change the stock filter at all. Just every 15k km the bypass filter element.
Will be interesting to see the test results. Did you get a sample tested before the install of the bypass filter as well?

same thing, i just wanted to start fresh with the full synthetic in there. i'm guessin i prolly coulda gone to 15K on the kleen oil before needing it changed (drive the additional 5K roundtrip from florida, so 16K before a change), then just kept the dino oil in there till the analysis said that it was time for a change. unfortunately, i didn't get a sample prior to the install (it was just before our trip to banff). plus i'd be comparing synth to dino. so next time, i'll change the stock filter only when the oil is being changed, then just do regular bypass filter changes. both kleen oil dealers i know have jetta tdi's and they change their filters at 15K and push their oil 40 to 50k before changing, smaller sump, so i can only assume that i can go longer with the delica (and even longer with the landcruiser which has a 9 litre sump). one of them has 625K kms and counting, motor and turbo has never been touched (but tranny's been replaced, typical for jettas), kleen oil system isntalled when new. guess it boils down to how far you want to push your oil and filter vs piece of mind (and still have savings compared to 5K oil/filter changes)

interestingly enough, the filter i use (2nd smallest) only make up 10% of their sales, i'm just a small fry, lol. but the service and support have been amazing with these guys. just amazed to see this filter clean brand new oil even further (w/o combustion)!

hope this works, just a cut and paste from an email:

"Please find below analysis results , diagnosis and recommendations quick look chart for Unit # 1995 Mitsubishi Delica Diesel
based on the sample taken on 20th June 2011.

Engine Unit # 1995 Mitsubishi Delica Diesel SPID 126280

11000 Kms on on oil & filter
Stable Physical properties. Soot is at 26 but well within the range. All other parameters are well within the permissible range.
Oil is suitable for further service ; To follow trend and Resample at shorter interval of 3000 kms.

Note : Although, the oil has been changed subsequent to the sampling, from the analysis results it is evident that
the oil is suitable for further service at 11000 Kms ( all parameters are normal and within control ). It is suggested
that oil drain interval can be extended and a sampling can be done at a shorter interval after the next 11000 Kms.

Diagnosis :

Physical Properties : Soot, Viscosity and TBN ( Total Base Number ) are all well within the permissible range.

Wear Metals & Contaminants : Very minimal wear metals and Contaminants. No abnormal wear noticed.

Additives : There is considerable difference in the additives level ; This might be due to us referencing the used engine oil
against the reference ( Chevron Delo 400 15W/40 ) and the actual reference could be different from Chevron - such as ESSO
or Shell ; Additives levels will change considerably from one manufacturer to other.

Please refer enclosed detailed Analysis report for further details .

Please confirm receipt of the report and let us know if you have any questions.

Thanks,"

just trying to figure out how to post the attachment with exact details of the analysis. but, guess i should be happy! this was regular dino oil at 11K kms. will also go over the results with more detail with the chemist.

... or what i could do is do a sample again at 11K kms to compare dino vs amsoil, lol. but i really need to test after, say at 15K to see how far i can stretch the bypass filter...guess now i coulda used the same oil on our roady (in virginia right now) to florida and sampled it when we got back at 16K kms approx. post bypass install.

cheers.

just a quick update with yet another oil analysis report. at 15K kms, still on the same kleen oil filter. i meant to compare apples to apples and sample at approx 11K kms but just didn't get to it. but, still, the oil scores 10/10 and can continue. i had planned on changing bypass filters at 15K, not sure now if i aim for 20K kms?! only thing to take note of is the lead, but i'm not sure what the risks are...if and when that figure goes up in time..? will check with a rep who knows their chemistry..

Image

btw, the oil is amsoil ame 15w/40 diesel oil, not chevron.

somewhat unrelated, and just for everyone's curiosity. i also got an analysis of the same amsoil in our diesel 80 seires land cruiser. but there is NO bypass filter yet at this time (i have it in the garage just waiting for time and wanted to sample pre and post) at the time, the oil had about 22K kms on it, on 1 oem oil filter changes at 10K kms (well and the 2nd one at 22K then new oil was put in as well) so the sample was at 22K and at the end of the 1st oil filter put at 10 k into it...

Image

the 1hdt takes about 9 litres of oil. with the new oil and filter in there now and passed 5K kms. the oil is still half golden brown! i also notice more soot created on the l400 vs the cruiser, not sure how to explain that, maybe b/c of the smaller oil capacity...?

just another update on oil anaysis after 140K kms (5K kms after bypass filter change midway) and at 150K kms when the oil was dropped and bypass/oem filters replaced (30K km interval).

note's from the lab:

" Please find enclosed the analysis report for the oil samples from 1995 Mitsubishi Delica Diese
at 140000 kms and 150000 Kms.

Although Copper and Lead are outside the specified limits at 150000, physical properties of the
oil is still stable and within permissible limits.

However, as the copper and Lead has gone up sharply, it is good decision to change the oil. "

Image

* we have decided that it would be best to take the oil to 25K kms (instead of 30K) and changing the bypass midway.

thanks Tony. fun stuff. if/when i do another, i will definitely remember to post the lab results (maybe i'll do one at 163K kms or 13K kms after oil change with before filter change, and another at 175K kms...then at 200K kms, fingers crossed the l400 keeps chuggin away). was a little worried about that copper tho. anyone know where in the motor that was coming from? bottom end bearings?

with the cost of each oil analysis, i think i'm still saving money with the extended drain intervals and extra filters.

so i was a little concerned about the copper numbers. i inquired and here's the response i got:

"Usually Copper shows up Diesel Engine's oil due to leeching of the oil cooler.
Rise of the lead content along with copper content points in that direction.

We see this trend in almost all CAT Diesel engines. Infact , up to 250 PPM of
copper in such Diesel Engines is not considered abnormal as long as the rise
is grdual or historic.

But in your case, rise in Copper sharp and towards the end. Also, we have not seen this
in earlier samples and hence it is not historic.

Infact, to be on the safer side, I would suggest an oil sampling at shorter interval instead of
waiting for the usual 10000 Kms Mark. You should test an oil samples at 5000 Kms to keep a
check on the trend of Copper and if it shows up again in big Number, probably you should give
it a closer look and talk to the Service guys."

i think just to be safe, i'll go ahead and get a sample done at 5K from now to see where copper and lead are at with relatively fresh oil/bypass filter...

anyone care to comment?
cheers.
