how much is normal??
I put a vented oil catch can on the black pearl and noticed smoke coming out of the filter. Is that normal or is there an acceptable amount?

Do you have something like steel wool in it to help condense the oil?

Most people seem to add it to increase the surface area to aid with condensing the evaporated oil. Another common thing to add is a small filter at the vent end as well - assuming you have it venting to the outside.

Yes there is a filter on the vent it's a sealed unit so I won't be able to put anything in side. I was just worried that it might be bad rings but I figure some smoke would be normal on these diesels.

Are you sure it is sealed? There is usually an opening to let the oil out, and that is where you put the wool in.prairie_pirate wrote:Yes there is a filter on the vent it's a sealed unit so I won't be able to put anything in side. So I put as much steel wool into the catch can as would fit but it still let's out a Smokey vapor. The only problem is when idling the vapor gets sucked into the intake duct for the heater and the inside smells like oil. As long as this is not the sign of bigger problems then I might just mount the vent in another location.

Re: how much is normal??
You could always re-route it to the original location, where it vents into the intake. The catch can is supposed to reduce the amount of oil vapour coming out, but not eliminate it.

Yea I was hoping to keep all of that oil from making a mess of the intake but that might be the easiest

There really is no appreciable increase in performance in routing the PCV to an oil-catch can instead of to the engine intake.
And leaving it as originally built eliminates having to reposition the catch can, as well as having to empty the catch can.

I've heard the same from a very experience diesel mechanic who is not affraid of aftermarket mods. This he says only really cool once you have a crome one mounted.mararmeisto wrote:There really is no appreciable increase in performance in routing the PCV to an oil-catch can instead of to the engine intake.
