hello guys, i apologize for posting this in the l300 section area, i dont own a l300 delica, however i own a 1990 Mitsubishi Pajero (its close cousin) let me start that i am thankfull for finally finding a forum that is Canadian, since we have our canadian ways and ways of getting parts. Anyways my pajero has the 4D56 Turbo Diesel Intercooled engine in it, and 2 weeks ago i ordered some brand new glow plugs, since i have trouble, starting this thing up in the cold weather unfortunately, its only got 146 000 kms and i doubt the glow plugs were changed since it arrived in Canada couple years ago. every cold morning i have to crank the engine over 3 times in order for it to get running. I asked other forums they said it was my glow plugs, and some said to do the manual button switch, which allows me to control the relay clicks. I ordered some HKT Cp-06 glow plugs, that came with the resistor pack, and i installed them today, i cleaned the bush bar, but i went to start it, and i couldnt hear the usual relay clicks when i turned the ignition to ON, after being totally baffled by this situation, and a few swear words, i came to the computer, and searched up, and came with and older thread on here on how the resistance of these glow plugs is higher than the stock, so it causes the relay ecu to think that the glow plugs are already pre-heated. So since i wasted money on these glow plugs, i may as well do the manual switch mod. so i have a couple questions.
-Can someone please link me on how to do this step by step with full pictures to a thread on how to do the mod, on a 4d56 Turbo Diesel intercooled engine?
-will i have to keep the relay that came with the glow plugs if i do the button mod?
-will this button mod harm my glow plugs or my engine over a long period of time?
-should i just simply try to send these glow plugs and their resistor pack back, and purchase true Genuine OEM mitsubishi glow plugs instead???
Thanks guys, help out a noob here

Re: Mitsubishi 4d56 Installed new glow plugs now start
I had the same problem with HKT plugs. The problem is that the resistance is wrong. I wired the manual switch to the 6v relay, I'm told you can wire it directly to the battery but since I'm assuming yours are the 6V ones you have to be careful not to overheat them this way. ideally you get some 12V ones and wire them to the 12V relay but if you don't mind depressing the manual switch for around 15 seconds before starting I would just make do with what you have.
Sorry, there probably is a step by step guide somewhere but I don't have it on hand. It is a very simple procedure though (I initially thought I had done it improperly but that's because I didn't realize I had to give the plugs power for so long).

yeah im looking for the step by step procedure on how to wire that manual button. And my original glow plugs are 6.2Volts so yeah they are the 6 Volt glow plugs. Also how do i check if each individual glow plug is lighting up? Like i want to test my old glow plugs, too see if one lights up more bright than the others

It's simple enough to test glow plugs; give em juice and grab hold and see if they're warm. You'll be able to tell immediately which one in a bank isn't warming up, or if none of them are; they get very toasty. Once they are out, you can just do a resistance check on each one and see if there are any that are open. Glow plugs can last a long time. Personally, I would do a compression check to make sure that isn't part of the problem; low compression will give the same symptoms. I've had glow plugs freeze in place and snap off, making pulling the head a necessity. Unless I know I have one not working I don't touch them.
I don't have a schematic for the glow plug circuit but it should be very simply to just wire a temporary contact switch to the relay coil. I don't know if you would have to ground it (12V always present) or its grounded and you need to add +12v (one end of coil grounded). If you go manual, you could always sell the control module on ebay.

another question. If i do this manual button thing on my pajero, will it be okay with the 6.2V glow plugs? Or will i just simply toast these plugs? And i hold the button for 1 second, release then attempt to crank it oveR?

The manual switch is a "must do" mod (IMHO). Yes 6.2v are fine. Just don't hold the button for too long.
To test your glow plugs, remove one. Ground the body of the plug. Touch the connecting point with a wire connected to the positive of your battery. Count how long it takes to turn red hot. That count is how long you hold down your manual switch.
There is a step by step install on this site somewhere. A solenoid between the glow plugs and the battery is important.
I use mine where starting is difficult or if the ECU dies.

Re: Mitsubishi 4d56 Installed new glow plugs now start
As mentioned before, run it through the 6V relay if you're worried about burning them out. This is how CVI recommends it be done. The downside is that you have to give it power for about 15 seconds to get it to warm up.tdpajero wrote:another question. Re: Mitsubishi 4d56 Installed new glow plugs now start
well its weird, i took off the brand new glow plugs, and took every single old glow plug i took out, and connected them to positive battery terminal and put them on ground, and they all lit up perfectly fine, i think it took like 2 seconds until it started to light up quite bright. The bus bar was very dirty and oily before, and i put it all together with old glow plugs, and fired it up. Amazing it wasnt started for 6 days, -15 Celcius and it fired up on the first crank, i counted between the relay clicks and when it clicked off, i counted about 5 seconds. So when i was testing them it took about 4 seconds until it was just about flaming red. So i think the buss bar was my problem, fired right up first crank cold as heck outside. Usually in this weather i would have been cranking it over at least 4 different times
