Hi,
I have had an issue since the purchase of my 94 L400 S.E. (4M40 engine)
It was imported with around 100K on the clock by the owner before me. Once imported it was updated, upgraded, whatever to make it through the national goal posts. At this time according to the sales reciept showing work done, the I.P. seal was also replaced. The van is now just over 128K. When I first start in the morning, usually hovering between -4 all the way up to a balmy +7 these days, the van starts within the first revolution or 3. Very quick. It idles fairly well for about 3-4 minutes and then something funny starts. At this point it begins to smoke very slightly, a white smoke. Not coolant but more like heavy over-fueling smoke. After this it starts to get heavier until it is a cloud around my front yard and drive way and the neighbors are offering firefighting advice. The van does begin to stumble slightly at this point but has not stalled as of yet. When I get in and press the accelerator pedal, the van slightly stumbles for a quick sec and then revs perfect and the smoke magically stops. If I let it idle more it all comes back. Once I start to drive and put load on the engine, it smokes white slightly until starting to show warmth on the coolant temp gauge and within a few blocks it is running perfect with no smoke.
I have not lost a drop of coolant since I purchased it 7K ago.
-I am leaning to an injector issue, like one is breaking at a low pressure and dribbling. The injectors were changed just prior to my purchase but they were replaced with a used set, no info given as to what was put in. No info documented on breaking pressures spray patterns etc..
-Could this be the start of the dreaded IP seal issue? I have never had a stalling issue
-I have installed a pyro and one thing I have noted is my EGT are usually in the neighborhood of 350-700F (180-370C) with the exception of a big hill where I think I hit 900F(480C) once. I'd say normally around town we see 400F.
-I feel it does also lack some power as there are times when matting the pedal certainly doesnt increase the engine output much, nor does it significantly increase the EGT. I realize I shouldnt expect SULZER power here, but it still seems low... -
-Boost seems to stay steady between 5-12 PSI. I will say that there is a small minute little wiggle on the needle. I can see it ..my wife cannot..
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
1st start of the day..
