Hi I am looking to buy a Delica this week and I was wondering what a good price would be for a 1994 super exceed white with 160,000 kms. Looks in good shape but I am not sure what these are worth. I am looking to possibly trade my 99 ml430 for it.
Thanks and hopefully I'll be a new owner pretty quick!

Depends. Here is my story which you can use as a benchmark.
1993 Super Exceed L300, LSD, Crystal lite roof (only one shade working), purchased November 2011 with 107,000 kms for $7000
Came with full set of extra rims, some spare parts, full set of factory floor mats, all receipts for timing belt, balance belt, water pump, new radiator, thermostat, valve cover gasket and tuneup done on import at 55,000 kms. I wouldn't call it a screaming deal or anything, but it was a Grade 4b (high grade) on import and was still in minty shape when I got it. Since then it has seen some off-road, so a few scratches and dents heh heh!
I've added load bars, Thule ski box, stainless steel muffler and WVO. $$$ but these are nice to have extras IMHO.
Two years later, and given that the L300's have further dropped in price due to the increase and popularity of the L400's I would say a nice shape 1994 Super Exceed with 160K kms and receipts for all the usual suspects, say $4000-6500.
Crawl under the van, close to the drivers front wheel and look up at the turbo. If it's wet, then that's pretty normal, if it's dripping oil the ground then it needs servicing, $700

Thanks for the replay TOJO. So it may be under valued compared to my ML430 or a little over valued. So if everything looks good no leaks you figure $6500 ish?

FYI, I had a buddy who lost his in an accident, and was only a 92 exceed with almost 200,000 on the clock and ICBC wrote him a cheque for 8 grand.

When was that? I know of people that have gotten as little as $6k a couple years ago. I got $14k for mine (that was in 2007 though)... I only paid 8k for it. I am sure with prices these days you would be hard pressed to get ICBC to cut you a cheque for much more than 6k.Rattlenbang wrote:FYI, I had a buddy who lost his in an accident, and was only a 92 exceed with almost 200,000 on the clock and ICBC wrote him a cheque for 8 grand.

The van was rolled near Christmas. he settled with ICBC sometime in February. I know he had some receipts for recent work done and all that...

Actually, ICBC tends to pay out at the higher end of market value - keeps the client happy and ends things quickly - time is money. Most people are pleasantly surprised by the payout (but not always).

Hmmmm, It is so hard to say without seeing it, and hearing it, and driving it.
Especially hard without knowing the service history which is the MOST important item. If you read the service receipts from a reliable local mechanic (not just some guy who might have installed a timing belt with incorrect adjustment so that in a few hundred km the engine self-destructs like Kathy & Brian's).
My theory (when buying a recently imported van) is that you spend $4000 extra at time of purchase to have all done professionally here, or you spend $4000 later as you gradually fix all the wierd things that occur. So, it depends how mechanically inclined you are, and how willing you are to deal with problems as they occur.
If this is just recently imported, it might have been sitting around without maintenance in Japan or here. But, if you are buying from a previous owner who has driven it here a while, then look up all their past postings as read what problems they have had and whether they cheaped out with paying for for good mechanics. Buying from a good long time local owner here can be good, if they fixed all the problems. Whatever, ensure all the little problems are fixed BEFORE you pay any money, as later the seller will NOT fix problems. Go test it to start up early morning, surprise them by phoning from outside so it hasnt been already started and slightly warm.
Expensive fixes such as IP Injector Pump rebuild (hard to start, black smoke) is $700 is to rebuild. Glow plugs, injectors, turbo rebuild (rough idle, slow uphill) not cheap. Timing belt PLUS balancer belt MUST be replaced every 100,000 km (some folk cheap out and just change timing belt, because the balancer belt is a lot more work).
Have you driven many delica, so you know what a good one sounds and feels like? You are welcome to drive mine to use as comparison (Burnaby). You are welcome to PM me with your phone number if you have questions (I am just an owner, since September 2007, but love L300s, and we have organized many meets and trips for this delica group).
Do spend a bit of money and get a pre-purchase inspection, even if you end up not buying the van. Note that inspections are mainly visual, not taking an engine apart to measure compression. BCAA does inspections, but may not be familiar with delica. For example, CVI in Richmond 604-247-0500 charges $75 or $100 to do it, and they know all the common Delica problems. Either way, you can drive it to an inspection as part of a test drive, or have the owner take it there and you pay for the test to be done. You get the results (you must be there watch what parts look like while being inspected, and hear what mechanic says so you can make an informed decision.
Keep in touch, let us know how it goes.

PS Also what you intend to DO with van matters. If you want to drive to remote area without local delica group to give advice, then go for best van. If you only drive locally, and are willing to learn to do your own maintenance, then a lesser van is OK.
