Good transmission shop for Delica
Hi all,
I hear a whining noise (seems to be transmission related) when I get around 2100 RPM in my 95 L400. If I let go of the throttle, it goes away but may come back right away if I accelerate again right away. It's not always there. Sometimes if it switches gears, it goes away. It's definitely a higher pitched noise. I have a sticker on the side that says ATF changed at 96k (It's Japanese, so I assume that's what it says). I'm at 103k now. I wonder if it has anything to do with the differential. I haven't flushed it and don't know what fluid it would take.
I'm wondering if anyone knows of a good transmission shop where I could take it in for a spin/diagnosis/guess.
Thanks.
Delwood

Re: Good transmission shop for Delica
The front and rear diffs take SAE80/90W GL-5 unless you have LSD in which case CASTROL HYPOY LS or equivalent.
The transfer case takes SAE75W/90 GL-4 and NOT GL5 btw.
Might be worth greasing the prop shaft UJ grease points to see if that helps, their locations are shown here:

Don't know of any transmission shops i'm afraid

I would change all your fluids, there's no telling how long it's been since they were done, even if it wasn't driven much since.

There's a sticker with ATF on the side of the driver, I assume done at the km's it says there (96k if I remember correctly).
I'll read about changing the other fluids and try it myself.
Thanks for your input folks.

That's the thing, it seems that it's when under load (meaning, I'm accelerating, or climbing a hill) but not towing. When I let go, it goes away.
Other thoughts?

could be still rear end...hard to tell without hearing it... flush fluids see if it helps and use a clean pan to look for any metal/water etc..

Where do I find these fluids, are they "over the counter" stuff or do I need to look for some special (JDM) imports mechanics? Any threads on how to do it?Diver wrote:The front and rear diffs take SAE80/90W GL-5 unless you have LSD in which case CASTROL HYPOY LS or equivalent.

I'll look for the grease points. What kind of grease does it take?Diver wrote: Might be worth greasing the prop shaft UJ grease points to see if that helps, their locations are shown here:

I've been crawling underneath today. Trying to upload some images here. I couldn't find too many greasing points. I did grease the propeller u joints but I understand I have to grease them until the old grease comes out. I've never done it before.
I couldn't find ball joints nipples. All I got was this:

I've been crawling underneath today. I couldn't find many greasing spots. (Nothing, it seems for the ball joints, see picture below). I don't know if that's just a lid or if it's all sealed from the factory. I checked the link you guys have provided above.
I've found a wet spot, don't know exactly what it is. Anyone ideas about what it looks like and what's been leaking from it?
The other greasing nipples I've found were by the wheels and I am clueless to what they are. I wonder if they are part of the break assembly and should not be messed with.

Wilfs Transmission does a complete flush and switch to synthetic for $180. They test drive it pull codes drop pan new filter flush new gaskets.
I used redline synthetic 75W-90 gear oil for my diffs and transfer case. It shifts like a dream into 4 now! No delay whatsoever. Costs a bit but do it once and forget it for years.

Looks like your upper ball joint is sealed (some are, some aren't), so no ability to add grease.Glenn Delwood wrote:I've been crawling underneath today. I couldn't find many greasing spots. Your leak is around the seal where the propshaft enters the (front diff?) or (transfer case?) - can't really tell from the photo which it is without crawling under mine to compare. Whichever it is I would check the oil level ASAP to make sure there's some there!
The nipples on the brake calipers are bleed nipples, not grease nipples so don't touch them.

The photo is taken from the back pointing forward and it does look transmission related (I think is the front differential).Diver wrote: Your leak is around the seal where the propshaft enters the (front diff?) or (transfer case?) - can't really tell from the photo which it is without crawling under mine to compare.
How do I check level and what oil do I add, as I assume I will need to add some? Is it 75W-90? Is it the same oil for the transfer case as for the differentials? Someone mentioned it's the same fluid.Diver wrote: Whichever it is I would check the oil level ASAP to make sure there's some there!

Thanks Diver.
