poof and black smoke with low rpm

Post by Rattlenbang »

My buddy with a new L400 is having problems with severe hesitation between 1000 to 1800 rpm, complete with loud clatter and tons of black smoke. This comes and goes, but gets worse as engine warms up. Being rpm specific I'm thinking turbo/wastegate issues. Any other suggestions?

Mine used to do the same thing but I had Coombs adjust the kickdown cable and tune the fuel pump up and it has been awesome ever since. Could just need some tweaking.

So it wasn't dropping into a lower gear? And by tweaking pump, do you mean injection pump?

Yeah, it was over reving between 40-60 and then dropping too low at 80. By adjusting the kickdown cable and the pump it imporoved those shift points and the kind of sputtering feeling when you accelerate. Smooth like butter now.

That gave you a bad burn at a certain temp and RPM range?

I really don't know enough about the pump but it was causing the van to shudder. But the rpm range seemed much better when it kicked down.
