Hey guys it looks like my rear seal may be leaking. Just a quick question is it easier to remove the tranny or the engine? I have a 96 l400 with an automatic trans. Rear seal looks easy to change it says you need a special installer tool but I doubt it's that difficult.
Thanks

Get a quote from one of the local mechanics. That's a good idea of how complex it is.

Re: Engine Rear seal
Split and move the tranny backwards as much as you need to reach in. The rear seal sometimes blows out if there's too much crankcase pressure (blocked breather?)
That said, you'd know all about it if it had popped out.
Are you certain the seal is leaking? Check the half moon seal at the back of the rocker cover too. Common leaky bit

Re: Engine Rear seal
The problem is I just got the delica and the rocker cover was leaking that coated the engine with oil. The valve cover was replaced before I took it home but the engine was left covered in oil. So I took it to work and steam cleaned the engine, tranny, and the whole underside leaving it spotless. After driving it for about a thousand KM's or so I see that there's a slow oil leak coming from in between the engine and tranny. I only assumed it was the rear seal. Could be residual from the rocker cover but I kind of doubt it. Thoughts? I will check the valve cover again to be sure though.

Mine is doing the exact same thing. I just replaced the rocker seal and cleaned it all up, but I still think it is residual from the rocker. Have you tried putting a socket on those bottom bolts and just tightening them up a little?WhoGotTheFunk wrote:The problem is I just got the delica and the rocker cover was leaking that coated the engine with oil. Haven't tried that yet but I will tomorrow. Really don't want to slide the tranny back while things are running so nice.Mine is doing the exact same thing. Re: Engine Rear seal
Exactly what I am thinking. If it is the case for mine, and tightening doesn't help, I think I would be content with a little oil leak. My other vehicle is a VW, so I am used to it!WhoGotTheFunk wrote:Haven't tried that yet but I will tomorrow. Ha! So are my other two vehicles. Sadly my 91 Jetta turbo diesel is getting the boot, now that I have my new Delica. I'll miss the 900KM tanks of diesel. My other vehicle is a VW, so I am used to it!

Re: Engine Rear seal
Seems we have a lot in common. I too have a jetta diesel, can beat the milage. Oh and a leaking main seal. What a small world. Mine is not a slow leak tho. After doing the timing chain last winter and putting tigweld4u's intercooler pipes on with his catch can, I found I could smell the oil vapour coming out of the breather. So I thaught I would be smart and wrought the breather tube under the van. Epic fail in the spring the slushy ice pluged the breather and altho I cant see it yet I am sure I blew the main seal. So after being mad at it all summer my wife and I started to pull the motor this week. I decided to pull everything out and replace anything that needs it and clean everything else. We only work on it one or two nights a week but ill keep you guys posted.
