Would you carry an 800lb load through the mountains?
My kids are in the Kootenays and could swing by an Okanogan wrecker and pick up a used Dodge 440 engine for me. The van already has a Westy camper cabinet and a rooftop tent plus all their camping gear. That means coming back through the Hope Princeton Hwy with that huge iron beast in it's belly, saving me $300.00 in shipping. Is it doable? Anyone know what the GVWR rating of these vans is?

No problem! I've taken 7 adults in my van (8 including me) along the Sea-to-sky with everyone's camping gear, 2 thule boxes filled to the brim with skis and board and a roof basket in behind with Jerry cans on it. The EGT's would rise much faster, but would never get dangerous as long as I took the hills slow (30kph at 3000-3500rpm in L if it's a really long steep hill)

Yes, it's doable. But, remind them to slow down and gear down and run up the hills between 3000 and 3500 rpm. Slooooow and steady....

Happy Day!

I hope so. Turns out their shipper won't deliver to a residential address, so I was stuck. Funny I had to go so far to get a Dodge big block at a reasonable price. The 70s weren't so long ago, were they?

I'd make up a company name at your home address and have it shipped. How would you feel if something happened to your family when they were transporting your engine. Scary thought....

Not sure if you are driving a 300 or a 400 but I brought a 900 lb motorcycle back from Edmonton, in the middle of winter, in my 400 lwb without problems.

You should have the engine shipped to/held at the trucking company terminal. It is much cheaper to do that over any place else, especially since a house would need liftgate service (super expensive).

My record is over 3500lbs divided equally between trailer and Van. That was 750kms, Overloaded yes but worked out none the less.
Basically I wouldn't worry as long as it is secured properly.

Well, he's an adult and the last thing he needs is the old man telling him what to do. I trust he knows how to handle packing the load safely. LIke the motorcycle in the above pic, probably one for the record books as unusual cargo for a Delica. A few weeks ago it was two 45 gal barrels of vegetable oil, but that's probably old stuff, not even worth mentioning

I take back my comment that htey knew what they were doing. They took the Connector and Coquihalla. Can you imagine climbing out of Westbank with an 800-lb engine in a fully loaded Delica? That hwy is crazy steep and climbs forever. They were doing under 50kph for an hour. I told them to take the Hope Princeton...

I haven't heard from them since Merritt, so gawd knows. That was at 8:00, the time they had planned to be in Langley. I'll bet they didn't rattle in until midnight. Hope they make it back today. Crazy young people.

Think I saw them pass through Penticton along the channel parkway yesterday afternoon. Yours is the L300 with the Columbus RTT is it not? I waved from my work truck but noone waved back boo hoo.
