Wiring up a light bar.

Post by Nordo »

So I'm building a roof rack for a RTT that I purchased, but I think its going to extend to the front of my van, so naturally I am going to add a light bar to it!! I will probably add a flood light to the sliding door side too. My question is this… how would you go about setting up the power for the lights?? Im no electrician but I can figure stuff out with a few helpful hints.

My idea so far is to go and buy a fuse box from Princess Auto and wire it directly from the battery, then run my lights from that box. It wouldn't be connected to the ignition, but it would have its own amp protection with the fuse box. I thought that I might also connect some type of cut-off just so there no draw when I leave the van for extended periods of time. Is this a good idea??
I only break stuff so i can put bigger stuff on.....

I wired mine off the battery directly (with an inline fuse holder and relay included in the kit). I took DinoEvo's method of waterproof connector just aft the snorkel location to connect wiring to the roof basket mounted lights. They work and work well. Just unplug and install the connector cap when the basket comes off. I'm travelling at the moment so don't have any photos, otherwise I'd post them.

Good luck!!

alti2d,

Where did you get the outlet?? I saw the pics of DinoEvo's but I can't seem to find one that is as slick as that. I found a number of 12v lighter type outlets, but its looks like the one Dino has plugs in from the top on a 90. Did you find a similar one to his?

Yes, the chandlery link is the one I got. And that is about what I paid for it too. Many days of saving lunch money and several options for doing it cheaper, of course, exist. That said, it does work well, I keep it lubed with dielectric grease to help it out some.
