Registration Information

Hi.

We are driving a BC registered Delica around South America, and looking to sell it on to another traveller to make the journey back to Canada. As the vehicle has been out of Canada for over 2 years the insurance is no longer valid, so would need to be renewed. We understand that there are some places the vehicle would not need to have physical checks done before insurance was renewed (e.g. Air Care.) To complicate things, we wonder if it is also possible to change the province a vehicle is registered in without physical checks, as it would be preferable for the vehicle to be registered in a province where insurance can be renewed online or by phone. The vehicle is also still right hand drive.
If anyone has any info that could help us, that would be great. We would love to drive the van back up ourselves, but sadly time and $ don't allow it

BC does not require physical checks between owners (no mechanical checks on private cares once registered unless the authorities pull you over and think it is unsafe). Aircare is only in the Lower Mainland (area around Vancouver) so if it is insured in the North or on the Islands like Victoria it requires no Aircare.

People who do sales and drive all over insure in Territory Z and require no aircare and it covers vehicles not parked at the same location..

I have no idea how ICBC treats a vehicle purchased out of country driven back? Given them a call, do not give them the vehicle particulars ask the questions as a prospective purchaser... they can be reasonably helpful (sometimes try a few people)....

also, As for plates you would have to be physically there or possibly a letter authorizing someone else to purchase plates/sticker which would have to be sent down to the vehicle.

In order to register the vehicle in a new name in BC (required to insure it in a new name) the vehicle doesn't need to physically be there (I've never been asked if the vehicle was in the province), but the driver has to be at an autoplan office to register the vehicle in their name to show them your driver's license and personally submit the transfer of ownership papers. Once it's registered and insured, insurance renewals can be done remotely.
