hello there, i recently purchased and 1998 l400 chamonix. and am new to these motors. when the engine is cold in the morning, it starts fine and idles fine, but about 5 to 7 min later it has a very grumpy idle, and starts smoking quite a bit. i'll then use the throttle lock to keep it on high idle for a bit, until the engine is at a decent operating temp. and the idle has smoothed itself out. any thoughts on what may be happeing?
thanks

Sounds like it runs rough once the glow plugs shut off... Poor compression or perhaps it needs some tuning? I am guessing the fuel is not igniting properly after the glow plugs are off, meaning the engine is still sort of cold.
What colour is the smoke?
Black - too much fuel, not enough air - check air filter or turbo.
White - too cold, fuel not burning, engine timing, fuel pump perhaps?

Hard to say from here...but it sounds like your hot idle needs to be increased. Your van has a cold and a hot idle, look for your throttle cable and back off the jam nut and increase your idle until she smooths out(while it's running after it starts running rough)
Good luck,
Brad.

hi, his delica has electronic injection pump,
that's the symtoms that there is problem in the electronic pump and computer of his delica.
u need a scanner for that, nobody has scanner for this newer delica here in bc for now, mostly people do guessing.
even me are having problem to diagnose.
cheers

While having an MUT scanner is ideal (MUT proprietary Mitsubishi Scanner) most OBD and MUT systems can still tell you whats going on with their sensors and such via the dash lights. Many vehicles can be placed in a display mode where a check engine dash light, or similar, flashes in a series of long and short blinks. For Mitsubishi its the voltmeter connection at the OBD plug you read from. You would need to know how to make the Deli's onboard computer activate this function and you would need a decoder sheet.
Here's a write up from Europe about Mitsubishi pre 96 systems. I don't know if this will help your 98 delica diagnosis but it gives you an idea of the premise.

You could drop into a local mitsu dealer and have them scan your system with their MUT II Scanner. With the codes in hand you could at least chase the issue down.

Yeah I joined the Dark Side because the medical plan is top shelf!

Re: l400 smoking after idling for 5 min
north American scanner for OBD2 will not work for the delica.
we try snap on and other high tech scanner for north America wont work,
even thru Mitsubishi dealer scanner wont work as its a Japanese spec vehicle cannot read.
that's the main problem now for the gen 2 delica.
its ok for now for that delica gen 2 but if problem occurs then the headache start.
guessing on this gen 2 delica cost a lot of money if not being careful whose the one who will fix this.
