thinking of getting a brand new engine. newb ?'s

Post by rouxel »

Ill try and keep this short as I can.

My gf and I bought a 91 L300 super exceed about a year ago. Its a diesel engine with automatic transmission and it currently has 125,000km on it and runts pretty well. previous owner took it to cvi for reg maintenance and deli tune before we bought it. we do a lot of long distance (5000km at a time) 3 week long road trips where we sleep in the van mostly. we need something that is a little better then "runs pretty good." so i have been trying to do some research online and i cant really find the answers im looking for. seems like everyone sees everything differently. guess thats y its a opinion. anyway, we were going to do a rebuild on our current engine but then i ran across this site/company that sells brand new engines and installs them. 0 km engines.

Now I am no mechanic, actually, I am far from knowing anything about mechanics so all the work will be done by someone that is. I dont plan on doing any of the work at all.

here are my questions. please forgive me if i sound like a idiot.

1. I have a $8000+- budget for work that i want to get done. what are your thoughts on getting a new engine from this place? good idea or bad?

2. It says i can upgrade to a water cooled turbo. should i invest the extra money for that since I know that is a general concern of delica owners or should i upgrade to a differant turbo all together?

3. Since it is going to be a brand new engine, should i buy anything else for it while im there and getting it put in? boost gauge, exhaust temp, etc?

4. The delica is a little light on power. Since the engine is brand new is there anything I can do to get maybe 50 extra hp out of it before i put it in? safe to turn up boost?

5. Should I rebuild tranny while I have the engine out? I found a gas delica for parts. IS the transmission the same on the gas engine? could take it and have it rebuilt before and give it to them the put in. Or are the transmissions usually pretty solid? Mine seems to work fine right now

Im sure Ill have more questions as the thread goes on.

Thanks for your help, I need it

for what it's worth, the manuals may be able to confirm if the bell housing profile is the same between diesel and gas but on at least the Manual transmission, the starter motor mounts in a different place between the diesel and petrol motors, and the bell housing is looking like a different shape

eg available on this forum site L300 transmission manual http://www.delica.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=7347

if you can get the chassis number of your van and of the donor van and put it into http://mitsubishi.epc-data.com you should get info on the transmission model fitted. for example on my own van, it shows the various transmissions applicable, under the column "spec":
http://mitsubishi.epc-data.com/delica_s ... 413,65420/

compare your intended purchase with the potential donor and see if there is crossover?
