L400 wiring colour codes

Post by patriceboivin »

Did the colour codes change on the Delica from year to year?
I'm wondering if the colour codes in the 1995 wiring manual would match those in my 1994 model.
I'm hoping they haven't can you imagine the confusion for the auto mechanics if auto manufacturers changed the wire harness colours every year.

I took off the side cover panel on the driver's side, there are dozens of wires in there.
I want to run the fog light switch wire from the engine compartment to under the dash but am not sure how to run it through the firewall.
I was hoping I wouldn't even have to do that but didn't see an empty plug inside the dash; looks like they didn't install the wiring for fog lights because the original owners didn't buy any. There also is no fog lights relay in the relay box in the engine compartment. There is an unused female plug near the front grille which originally may have been for fog or spot lights, but I have no idea where that wire leads.

The colour codes matter if I'm going to link the switch to the right wire for the fog lights. I don't want them to be on when the high beams are on.

No. I have a wiring schematic...somewhere around the house....but it covers the Gen I L400 all the way to 1996. There are differences between engine types and that in turn affects some the instrument schematics. There are also differences between heater systems. Some have electronic heaters and some have old school...but even most of stuff is the same for power and ground config's.

Most Deli's I have seen have the basic wires for fog/driving lights. I bet all of your Deli's harness is actually in place including the connections for the dual switch and relay plugs which are connected to the factory headlights....mine shut off when I activate highbeams and I have dual driving lights on my Base Model L400.

The dash plugs are probably tied off behind the instrument cluster. The fact you have factory plugs outside at the grill tells me your Deli has the harness already...and you most likely have 2 sets of plugs. One is at the center grill the other is probably behind the front wheel well splash guard, not easy to get at though.

Big Bird,

Thanks for replying.

The plug I found was inside the engine bay, in the front:

I don't have the fog lights relay in the relay box. I think it's supposed to be next to the Horn relay, which is the last one in the row.
When Diesel and Electric here installed a new horn on my van they bypassed the relay slots altogether. Maybe they decided it would be faster than figuring out how to connect a relay in the proper location.

I removed the buttons to the right of the steering wheel (coin holder, rheostat, fog lights button I had put in for now) and shined a flashlight through the slots to see if I could find a female plug there, but didn't see any. Maybe I will have to take the dash apart to be sure.

Big Bird you were right, after taking one of the covers off I found a plug tucked under the steering wheel, wire colours were RW, R with silver ">" on the wire, green and white, one black with silver ">". I am hoping this was for fog lights.

I took a picture of the inside of the relay box, it may just be that the fog lights relay is indeed wired but that only the relay itself is missing. I'll see if I can find a relay locally here. Would the Mitsu dealership have Omron relays? Maybe NAPA?

I cleaned up the "mystery plug", wires are almost all R-B with silver ">" on the wires, others are just R.

I haven't found a corresponding plug hidden inside the left side of the vehicle, but it's hard to see in there. I wish I could lift the vehicle, it would make things a lot easier. If there's an unused plug on the right side it would make sense that there would also be one on the left side.

Oh and that plug in the front is not the same as the one on the PIAA fog lamps, I'll either have to find an adapter or wire them directly without using plugs. Oh and I received the H4 55W yellow bulbs today, I"m curious to see how bright they are.

Deli's usually have 2 switches in their factory configuration for aux. lights

One switch is just for power and that's wired to a constant battery source. (not a keyed aux power supply).
the second switch changes where the power goes...if you have 2 sets of lights like I do: You could have floods and pencil beams. Floods and Fog, HID and LED. Pick your setup.

I have a pair of 100Watt ditch lights on the outer bars. They light up the sides of the road nicely.
Then I have a pair of ridiculously bright LED's that are narrow band driving lights.

When I turn on my highbeams power to the extra lights is turned off and thats factory wiring.

Dealer...maybe....If you poke around a wrecker in your area and snoop under the hoods of Plymouth Laser/Eagle Talon or any Dodge Colt from the 90's you are certain to find the relay you need. You will also fnid clips, dome lights, body panel clips and some trim buttons that fit our Delica's. These old chrysler gems are a treasure trove of hard to get bits. We in the auto trade call them legacy parts cuz they fit so many vehicles around the world.
