L400 DOT headlights

Post by Simon84 »

I am the second owner of a 95 L400 (I did not import it) and I keep getting flashed by oncoming drivers (they flash their lights, not body parts- that would be more fun though!).
It seems that the lenses are not DOT as it is not written on them. However, they look like shiny new headlights so I thought they were replaced.
Is it possible to adjust or modify these lenses?
Just checked on coombs auto and they want $450 per lense for DOT.
Is there a cheaper source for these?

I did a search but could not find much about this specific headlight issue.
If anyone has some answers, much appreciated.

Hey Simon. I am assuming yours is a Series 1?
I bought new lenses for my Series 1 L400 when I imported it. All I did was switch the lenses. If I remember correctly they were about $200 each. There are lots of posts on here and the Delica Club site on how to change them. I didn't need to re-aim the lights or make any other changes. I just popped the lights back in. I don't have problems with people flashing me.

If they have been changed to lights or lenses for a LHD vehicle, I believe it is possible to make adjustments to the aim of the lights. Maybe the previous owner changed the setting or a shop did it for him?

Have a look at this post re headlight markings. It should help you with determining if your lights are for a left hand drive vehicle and if they are acceptable for use in North America.
If your lights are still for RHD vehicles then that's your problem. If the previous owner didn't change from the original RHD lights then the light from them will be directed up and to the left (right into oncoming drivers eyes). You cannot make adjustments for this. It requires new headlights or lenses for a LHD vehicle.

In order for a RHD Delica to pass its provincial inspection the headlights must have the correct E-Code along with arrows that point to the proper side. Chances are your headlights may be aimed a little too high. L400's do have a fairly high headlight location and I get flashed sometimes as well.

If you do have the wrong lenses they can be purchased in pairs so you can swap them yourself with time, a heatgun and proper headlight glass sealant. The other option is buy a premade set from Rising Sun Imports, Amazing Auto, Rocky Mountain Imports, Commbs Country Automotive...these places are in Richmond/Vancouver or Vancouver Island.

Hi Simon, on your headlamps should be an "E code". Refer to http://www.delica.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=12095 . You want an E code from a country (like Canada) that drives on the right, Japan drives on the left.
