travelling and spare parts

Post by Green1 »

In light of the fact that parts for these vehicles aren't widely available wherever you happen to be in North America, I'm trying to figure out what spares are a good idea to have with you when travelling. basically I'm looking for anything that is:
1) small enough to carry with you (no spare engine or transmission!)
2) debilitating if it breaks (not worried about lights, or air conditioning, etc)
3) your average "small town garage" won't be able to fix/jerry-rig.

On the list already is a full set of belts and filters. but what else is "essential" to carry?

Old rad hoses, spare fuel line, duct tape and zap straps (a Telus guy wouldn’t have access to those), tire repair kit, wire splices, extra valve stem, odd sizes of hoses clamps, small nuts and bolts (first item to save me on the road in my first Delica, the pin on the IP linkage fell off. With a small bolt and two nuts to lock it, and it’s still like that today after two plus years of use). Goes to say you'd have varies tools.

If you’re off the road for a long time how about some general bushing material, wheel bearings, set of manual hubs, universal joint, rad stop (never use the stuff unless it’s an emergency), and how about a CV axle to be safe. Maybe also some super-strength metal epoxy.

near as I can tell everything you list is available at pretty much every garage, so I'm not worried about them (I'm no more vulnerable to those than any other vehicle on the road, so I may have to wait for a tow truck, but I have CAA)
I was thinking things like a water-pump, things that can break and leave me stranded and may not be available locally

Hi,

This is a good topic. Nothing to offer but I'd like to know too. Delica specific parts to have on hand. For trips but also since we live in a town without a Deli garage and are a one vehicle family - we get stranded if the van goes down.

BCDelica: just to clarify, the items you suggested are all a good idea (and I've been planning on putting many of those together in a kit...) I'm just trying to figure out what items I should hunt down while I still have the time to wait for them to come in, rather than when I'm half way through my vacation... I've been stranded for almost a week with a domestic vehicle in the middle of nowhere BC just because the local garage couldn't properly track down a serpentine belt (should have been easy), I'd hate to see what would happen if a Delica specific part died...

How about keeping the phone numbers of Mardy Delica and CCautos handy. You can call either one from Kissmearse NFLD or Pueblo Mexico and they could ship what you need.

that's on the list too! (I've had the cracked head and destroyed radiator already, and nice as it would be, I'm not going to carry a spare of either of those!)

c'mon now, someone has to have a serious answer to this question?

PCSpecialist: on a side note... this is the first time I've seen your signature be right as to who my ISP is... I guess my old IPs weren't assigned where they should have been...

One thing I forgot is that I do carry around 4 glow plugs in my 'fly away' box, I bought em a year and half ago. Maybe injectors would be a good idea too, but I'm not sure if there an off the self part for the Delica.

Second that keeping the phone numbers handy, put them in a safe place in each van. Come to think of it I should get Mardy's number, I haven't left home without Glen's (Ccauto) yet. How about a service manual in the van (we only have one for two)?
