l400 crank pulley

My Deli blew it's Crank Pulley this morning. Oh what fun!!! (Not!)

I did pull everything apart and ordered new bits but I think I'll mount my gopro clone and cronicle the install via time lapse.
the new parts should arrive on Monday.... Thanks RSI!

Hope the video will provide some good insight for those on the forum that have yet to experience what is a fairly common problem with a 15+ year old Delica.

How serious of a problem is it? Any diagnosis?

The Deli's crank pully is comprised of: The inner core which has a rubber ring injection molded to it at the manufacturer....and an outer ring that drives the belts. The outer ring is pressed over the rubber ring with the help of water based lube that dries and allows the rubber to grab the pulley ring tight.

Over time the rubber starts to dry out due to age and heat from the engine and that bond gets weaker allowing the pulley section to move...usually towards the radiator and clutch fan but not always as they can move backwards towards the engine.

So how serious is this? Very and if your Deli is 20-years old chances are this is a problem that will show up with little warning. Testing is by pry bar. If the pulley moves off the core with gentle pressure then you need a new pulley.

My first indicator of a problem started with a strange squeak about a week ago which I thought was a sticky AC idler belt pulley. Did that repair and the noise changed but didn't go away.

April 30-Saturday AM I started the engine and heard what sounded like a hockey card in bicycle spokes.....the pulley had moved forward 1.5 inches and was hitting the clutch fan. I was lucky....this happened at home in the garage. When I tore it down I noticed the pulley did rub against the timing cover before moving forward (that was the squeak I was hearing). Luckily the cover is okay. So now I wait for parts...pulley, crank seal and new belts.

If you have the tools and skills this is a basic job but there is lots to remove just to get at the pulley...wait for the time lapse and you'll see.

Just a heads-up but in that 2nd photo it looks like your 710 cap is on upside-down. I went and checked my van and it had the same problem, but it is now fixed.

Thanks for this great post! My van has a pronounced squeak that seems to have gotten worse lately, which means it could be my pulley. I don't have many tools or skills, so I'll be getting this checked out soon by someone who does.

Also, just a heads-up but in that 2nd photo it looks like your 710 cap is on upside-down. I went and checked my van and it had the same problem, but it's now fixed.

What and where is a 710 cap?

I have been warned that my L400/4M40 crank pulley will need replacing so I plan on pre buying one.

Does anyone have the part number handy?

Has anyone bought an aftermarket one? Results?

It's from a "blond joke" that dates back to when Noah was building the ark: 710 = OIL (upside down).

The fun didn't end until May 4th when the parts were finally delivered by Canada Post a full day later than expected....geez. But the delay did give me some incentive to fix the ugly looking stock valve cover which has since been painted bright red (high temp of course).

I decided to get OE parts for this so-called Steven at Rising Sun in New Westminster. Yeah OE is more money but I didn't want future risk issues with the parts so I bit the bullet.

For you gearheads I did setup my Action Camera and compiled a time lapse of the installation job. Takes about 3-mins to view.....took just a little over 2hrs to finish the job as seen. The paint on the valve cover was tack-dried with a heat gun so it would be hard enough to handle the next day without smearing or staining the red color.

When installing an updated crank pulley and seal do you put the oil slinger back in or is it not needed?
