Strange noise when backing and turning...!

Post by ChuckBlack »

Bonjour a tous!!! Hello all, I'm not too good with torsion bars and front suspensions...so I'll get to the point fast... When I back up, then turn my wheels left or right, i can hear a cluck clung noise...
I've double checked the sway bar links, bushings, tie rod ends, upper and lower ball joints and shocks are goods too. What else could it be... I've spent some times the other days removing the front wheels, and checking everything. Still can't find nada!!! Any ideas gentlemen???

The bolts that hold the front subframes to the chassis are notorious for causing a single "clunk".

There are two on the rear subframe (the one that holds the front axle) near the bump stop:

...and another two larger bolts on the front subframe (the tubular one that holds the steering rack).

You say you've checked the wishbone bushes, but just make sure the bolts are nice and tight. The cam plates can move around if the bolts aren't tight enough.
Nothing says "poor workmanship" more than wrinkles in the duct tape.

Process of elimination I'm about to do here gentlemen!
I'll remove the sway bar completely first, then shocks then who knows...
Of all the research I've done...
It's definitely not the torsion bars or the upper or lower control arms. Tomorrow I'll start the process...

Meanwhile... Hopefully someone will have given me more stuff to check!!!

It might just be the end of it!!!

Here's a quick update... All of this got me thinking... I've triple check everything... hence it should be ok...

I tried backing up like the usual and turning the wheels left and right but instead of using the foot brake by using (front & rear) I only used the park brake to slow me down... No more clung clink noise... I'v double check back and fort with and without the brake... So... It must be something to do with the brakes... At least I'm getting closer to what I need to check!

Bonne nouvelle chere ami(e)s! Great news dear friends...

I checked the front brakes and found my clung noise... Removed the Calipers and inspected the brake pads contact between the piston and the opposite fork and they were definitely rocking up and down as soon as I was reversing and applying the brakes. Applied some brake lublicant on all moving parts as you would during an inspection. Test drove and voila! No more noise. Well, just the regular ones anyway!!!

Nice info here for those who wishes to learn about brakes and lubrication!!!

Congratulations, Chuck. I found that a little synthetic high temp grease on the glide pin goes a long way.

How were your stablinks and bushings on your stabiliser bar, while you had it off?

Falco.

All were good. As a matter of fact, I had just replaced the sway bar bushings and ball joints a few months ago!

You use the traditional rubber bushings or the red polyurethane ones? How are you finding them?

I"ve been pretty lucky with bushings, I usually take them out, then run to my local Napa and match them up by measurements. I did so with all my tranny bushings and sway bar, shocks..
I've yet to try poly. I have used them for different purposes but was not too impressed... Between -5 to -30 cel I would ratter have nothing at all!!! It's like driving an Army truck!!! Stiff as a (you know what I mean!!!)

Why...? Have you been using Poly?

I think I put them in around '09, they've been pretty good. There will be articles written about polyurethane bushings on this site, probably why I went with them. I'm thinking that my original rubber ones were the originals, ergo fifteen or sixteen years old, pretty good innings ~ the polyurethane ones are supposed to last longer ~ I guess we will see.

Like I said previously, I just happened to know a shop that had a few bushings that ended up fitting. But over the years I've come across many bushing that can but fitted in a multitude of applications. I can't bloody figure out how to resize any pictures on my new Mac... Things changes with computers I can't bloody ... GRRRRRRR!

Anyway, Sorry about that... Perhaps measure your actual bushing opening, width and thickness and call your local part store... They'll match it to your needs. As soon as I figure it out I'll shoot ya"ll some pictures!
