Hi Everyone;
Still working on my 1994 Spacegear 2.8 L Turbo Diesel.
My delica started with whistling sound, then later lacked power and blowing black smoke under load. We thought it would be a simple intake manifold leak. So this week I changed all 4 intake manifold gasket, which was a pretty difficult task.( I swear I can do surgery after this, having new respect for mechanics now.) However I still have the same issue. Black smoke under load, no power. Whistling sound is gone. Also noticed engine oil very low and added more.
One thing I noticed when I took the hose off the turbo, there were engine oil inside the hose and inside the turbo. When press the gas pedal lightly, there were no air blowing out of the turbo, only when pressing gas pedal forcefully, the turbo would spit out engine oil and air.
Do I need replace a new turbo? is there some kind seal leaked between the engine oil into the turbo?
Any suggestions?

If it was spitting out oil it sounds like a turbo with a blown seal. They can be rebuilt with new seals if they're not too badly damaged, but sometimes it's cheaper to just buy a new turbo.

Usually I'd ask if the turbo's intake hose also had oil in it (which would be coming from the engine's breather port) but I wouldn't expect there to be *that* much oil coming from there. If the intake hose has a little oil, but the outlet hose has a *lot*, then the oil's coming from your turbo.

You know about diesel runaway, right? When the engine runs faster and faster and won't stop because it's running on engine oil being blown out the turbo? Try to avoid that.
Nothing says "poor workmanship" more than wrinkles in the duct tape.

Sounds like your turbo is gone. Has the turbine wheel been rubbing on the outer housing? (Bad). How much play is there? Some play in the turbine is normal. It is floating on the shaft.
Almost every engine i work on has some amount of oil inside the hoses. Thats normal.
We never rebuild turbos on bigger offroad engines but i am sure its doable.

Just to be clear, oil spitting out of the turbo is not normal.

204explorer: if you just press the gas pedal normally, there is no air at all, only when you floor the gas pedal then air and oil spitting out.

Sounds like I need a new turbo. Anyone know the part number for the 1994 Delica Space Gear L400 2.8L Turbo diesel?

I have quote for turbo TF035 49135-03100 for 4M40 engine is that correct?

Also is the turbo water cooled or oil cooled?

Anyone installed a turbo? is it difficult job? The van is parked in Canal Flats close to Fairmont hotspring, near golfing, fishing, hiking and hotspring.
Willing to trade free vacation accommodations for work done on the van. Just throwing out there. :-)
