2002 4M40 Turbo Issue

Post by Lanky »

Hey everyone.

The last week I have developed a mechanical rotation noise. I have parked the van and have been driving my truck to ensure I don't explode anything.
Initially I had thought the noise was the timing chain as the van just hit 180,000km. I decided to do a big service this weekend to cover my ass incase it was something stupid to help rule out the noise. It became very apparent after removing the intercooler that I had oil in the inlet and outlet. After checking the turbo area there was a small drip on the down pipe, other than that it was clean and I cannot visual see where it was dripping from.
I currently do not have a boost gauge installed but it is audibly still spooling but the noise is getting worse so it will be parked until I figure out whats going on with it.

My question:
Does anyone have any experience with rebuilding the turbo? In my mind for the cost/time efficiency it may be easier just to swap a new turbo in.
I have attached some videos for audio reference.
If this has been diagnosed previously by someone, does this sound like a lubrication issue and can be rebuilt? It does sound like the wheel/shaft is not happy.

Thanks everyone!

it's about the same cost to have it rebuilt or put in an aftermarket turbo if I remember correctly. If you rebuild have a shop do it as it needs to be balanced. Sounds like your seals are going and play in the turbine.
