Sudden power loss

I know what I'm about to write has been covered in other posts, but not quite... (from what I've found):

I have started to spew copious amounts of black smoke when accelerating and have lost a substantial amount of power. This condition literally came on overnight (OK, maybe over two days), our Delica seemed like it had plently of power and I hadn't seen any smoke at all just a couple days prior. It still starts no problem like it always has, and doesn't seem to be making any weird noises. It actually seems to run a bit better before it is fully warmed up! I was already planning on visiting Mardy in a couple weeks to get "DelicaTuned"- but... how concerned should I be here? Would it be too risky to drive from Kamloops down to Richmond?

Relevant past history might be that we had to have the rear fuel tank replaced a couple weeks back due to corrosion, and the problem did seem to pop up just after we got it back.

Hi, i see your point,
check first if your fuel filter is clog, then maybe you have a bad fuel you put in there or with water on it.
the problem is that when your injector is plug or has water on it, the engine cannot run well tendency is you put more pressure on the pedal or put more gas to the engine & that create more fuel than the amount of fuel the engine need.
another thing also is that if your egr valve is clog, it might & will contribute to loss of power & create black smoke in to your exhaust.
its just to many things to consider to make this delica do the fine tuning. as this delica has never been service in japan since new.
you have to remember all this delica when we buy this from japan the previuos owner usually dont service it since they own there van. its just expensive over there to fix it.
try to used fuel additive for now maybe injector is clog or gel due to your weather over there if its still cold in your area.
then we can go from there.

Could your Turbo have packed it in? It was the sudden nature of your problem that made me wonder.

A faulty turbo can cause low power, black smoke, excessive oil consumption, oil in the intake, oil in the exhaust as well as other problems.

Your injector pump timing has been changed, most times i can happed when balancer belt or tensioner is old and jumps over a tooth and your timing is off. if you hear grinding or clunking noise as if something inside your engine is broken, then it is your timing. be prepared to change all the belts, tensioners, oils seals, waterpump and then correct the timing.
