upgrading to 31" tires. fuel consumption verdict

Post by jessef »

Those of you who have experimented with different sized tires from 235's to 31's.

What have you come to the conclusion on fuel consumption ?

Highway vs. city vs. off road

Aside from looks, is the ratio (RPM) difference on the highway between 30's and 31's significant enough and does it offset the higher fuel consumption ?

Looking for real off/on road readings.

i dont got any numbers for yeahz.i would say that if your in the city all the time i wouldnt go bigger (31) cozz its hard to get up to a decent speed, and when your playing red light green light in heavey traffic it gets very frustrating. though when driving highway all the time (like myself) i find once you get up to speed you hold the speed.

Thanks Patty.

I'm looking specifically for fuel consumption.

The major difference between the 30-31's is the extra meat/width that's kissing the concrete.

Delica's have different gear ratio's than some of Pajero's (mine had 5.29's tractor gears) and I had to go up in diameter to compensate for the RPM's on the highway. But fuel mileage suffered.

Same deal on the Delica's with you guys running 31's ?

I think I may have overstated the "helps dramatically with my fuel mileage" statement. I think it helped a touch, but more importantly it lowered my RPM. I think if you went up to 31's but were able to stay narrower (like a 9.5) that it would help even more. In the end, usually bigger tires are a bigger expense all around... if you break even be thrilled.
