Racks???

Post by Fanny Bay Delica »

Does any one know how to get those racks (like the Mystery Machine has)? I was able to get a brand new Mitsubishi ski rack off e-bay through the Delica shop in Oz, $100 CAD plus shipping out of Japan but I've not been able to find the storage/travel racks. The seem quite common on the UK/Aussie sites????

Pls let me know if you've got a connection (Bruce - do you have really large luggage   )

Cheers!!

Adrock posted some info about his roof basket that he bought in North Van. I can't find the post but if you do a search you can probably find it.

just got in here and read this. If you need any info feel free to ask. I love my rack though. Just loaded it and tarped it very easily this morning and made the 900km trip home no problem. Bags were dry and happy.

Hi Andy,

I don't mean to upset you or anything, but is this the sort of thing you're on about?? :P :P

Image

As well as the five there in the picture, I also have a full Jaos rack spare as well (wanna see a pic of that too! )

Racks are actually quite hard to find for Deli's in the UK and this little stockpile has taken me a few years to aquire!

My fave of all though is the aluminium cased 'wind-out' awning which will be making an appearance on the 'Mud Monkey' when it is near completion! (note - wind-out not roll-out! )

Unfortunately, my suitcase did not come from the same manufacturer as the phone boxes seen in Dr Who! :( :( (does that translate?? :? )

Regards for now,

Bruce.

Hi Josh,

The roof crate on the Mystery Machine is an Aiba Works crate. VERY hard to come by in the UK and even rarer to fing one for an L300! :?

Aiba crates are the bees bo11ocks of the roof crate world and if any do ever come up for sale in the UK, they tend to go for a lot more than the other makes of roof crate! :( If any do appear, they are usually 90% from Pajeros but these will not fit an L300 due to the wider gutters etc...

In the last 4 years I have only ever seen one other L300 Aiba crate for sale - mine cost me £150 and the other one went for £350! :?

More common are the Jaos and genuine Mitsubishi crates. These come up every now and again, but prices vary. Anything from £80 for an 'OK' one up to £250 for a good crate - but like alloy wheels, there are SO many variants of each crate! Different lengths, widths and then the type of leg/foot they have and how many per side (2 - 4 depending on the length and carrying capacity) A lot of the feet that come with crates aren't long enough for high roof L300's, so the feet have to be ditched and roof bars used.

Low roof L300's are easier to make racks & crates fit!

Of the six spare racks I have in the garden, NONE will fit straight onto the Mud Monkey! The Jaos (not pictured) will need new, longer feet fabricating (and widened!) Of the Aiba crates (at the back of the stack) none will fit, but I might 'ba5tardi5e' the three to make one monster rack - but I will still need to fabricate new feet and clamps etc... :? The other two (at the front) will only fit with roof bars - but I don't like this option and will move heaven & earth to make either the Jaos fit, or create the beast of all racks out of the Aiba's......

If you can wait that long, when I come over I'll bore you to death with all the 'ins and outs' of crates and making them fit!  Just add it to the list of things to quiz me on!

Regards for now,

Bruce.

P.S. I've never considered getting a rack from Japan because it would be CRAZY money to get it shipped to the UK!

P.P.S. The Jaos cost me £100 last week and I should be able to get £200+ if I can get it to fit an L300 £250+ if I can get it to fit an L400... :D

Bruce, Adrock,

Been in Nova Scotia for the past week and I'm looking forward to getting back to Deli land (BC)!! :D :D

Thanks for the info!! I think I might find a genric rack (tons of them all over the net) and attach it to my ski rack bars (once I've removed the ski sections). It might sit a bit high but will be by far the cheapest solution for stowing gear after winter.

Bruce - The awnings you attach to the racks, do you mod the racks yourself or did you find it as a complete rack/awning package?
Cheers!!

Andy

I asked a dealer here, and they said the only place they could get them was japan. And guess how much it would cost.... close to $2000!

Hmmm, I wonder how much it would to get one sent over from the UK? 150 to 350 pounds.. that is a steal, even with the shipping I bet. Ok maybe not a steal, but under the $2000 crazy price.

Anyone know someone that can weld aluminum? (They are aluminum right?)We should just make our own.

Hey Josh,

I can weld aluminum, stainless steel or regular steel here. I am also waiting for my JD Squared bender to show up. I plan on building a rack and ladder for the van in aluminun soon. (Not sure how soon I can weld after I get Laser eye surgery on Monday :P :P :P ) I also am going to do new bumpers and bull bars. If you have a design to copy bring it along when you come down for the rally and we can discuss it.

I got my rack 45" by 60" for $400 and change.

There are a bunch of attachments and stuff on the surco website but I got mine from north shore off road, where they can get any of those parts in. Also cheaper than the $2000 crazy price.
