Roof Rack - for a canoe

Post by jayDAWG »

Does anyone know where I can buy a roof rack to fit a delica (moon roof)... all i want to do is carry a canoe. Canadian tire sells some for a about 200 bucks... but i am not sure if these fit. Has anyone bought a good rack to carry a canoe?

thanks in advance

It depends on what you mean by a moon roof? Is your van a high roof or a low roof model?

I've been doing a lot of research into this myself. I have a high roof model and found out that the cheaper brands don't make a model that fits. Both Thule and Yakima make feet high enough but are pretty expensive. You will save about half if you buy them in the states. Check out REI's website.

What I ended up doing is buying a second hand set of Yakima A1 racks and then bought the high rise spacer kit ($70 CDN) so that I could modify them to fit my van. Thule does not have a similar option so make sure you get the 'super high foot' model, the regular high foot doesn't clear the roof.

If you have the low roof van you will probably have a lot more options available.

Good luck.

Here's one that hold two canoes; http://www.delica.ca/forum/heavy-duty-l ... -2804.html. The latches that secure ladders work wonders for holding a canoe, though still through a rope over it ok.

[shameless plug]Though Criagslist is a good source also, but see if you can find a better deal for such a heavy rack anywhere.[/shameless plug]

I use a Thule high foot, plenty of clearance.

I bought and returned a set of the 387 Thule high foot gutter mount feet because they would not clear the roof of my van. They fit the front, but not the back. This is the set I bought... http://www.thuleracks.com/product.asp?dept_id=3&sku=387

The 953 super high foot set should fit but they run $295 CDN up here just for the foot pack. Thats the price before you start adding locks and load bars. http://www.thuleracks.com/product.asp?dept_id=3&sku=953
