rear spoiler/terzo ladder combo

Post by sayulita101 »

Does anyone out there have photo/link of a high roof spoiler/terzo ladder combo.Ive got the ladder insalled off to the left but to insall the spoiler I think it will have to be centered thus blocking the licence plate. maybe a different ladder would be the answer. any help would be greatly apreciated. Also we got a wooden lunch table with cup holders , was this a stock item? Ive never seen them mentioned or a pic of one in use. Thanks ,
Paul

The table is a very rare optional accessory, someone was just mentioning wanting to acquire one...

here is where mine is located with spoiler.

btw, anyone know a good place to start looking for a new rubber stopper for the top of the ladder? there are 2 and I'm missing one :(

also I can't wait to get these winter duelers off and get something a little more mud friendly on :)

You can cut a piece of rubber from home depot and just use that. I've seen it done. Will probably do it on mine when one/both go.

Did you paint your ladder black ?

sayulita101: I'm addressing that issue at this time - I'll let you know how I make out. I have the same ladder as you.

loki: I think you have a slightly different ladder than ours - maybe that's why it fits while ours don't.

As I mention above, I'm making it work on Moon Machine and will post pictures when done.

The 'standard' Terzo ladder for a high roof will fit perfectly with a genuine OEM spoiler.

Paul (sayulita101) your ladder looks like it has been mounted a bit too far over to the left of the tailgate and this will affect the fitment of an OEM spoiler. In Loki's photos you can see the ladder is positioned further to the right which gives room for the left hand 'foot' of the spoiler. Here is a close-up of where I had mine mounted before I sold it.

Image

Looking at the upper mounting brackets, they don't look correct/sit right compared to the other high roof brackets I've seen and this might be because it's too far over?? (difficult to tell from your picture) Have a close look at this and compare with yours....

Image

I notice that you have the rear number plate 'garnish' surround - quite a rare accessory from the options catalogue! This might be one of the reasons your ladder has been moved so far over??

In answer to your question - yes you should be able to fit a spoiler to your motor with that ladder - but it will need to be moved over a bit if you can? (5 min job)

Please can you take some more shots of the ladder & some close-ups of the brackets so I can see exactly what's going on and why it isn't sitting right??

Many thanks,

Bruce.

My turn...

I'm starting to think, not only is there not a 'standard' ladder for these vehicles, but there might be right, left and centre models.

Note in sayulita101's image, which is a side-on shot so it's a little difficult to determine, there is either no dog-leg or a dog-leg to the right (on the left-hand vertical). In loki's ladder, the dog-leg is to the left (on the right-hand vertical). Mine, shown below, also dog-legs to the right, which makes sense (in my mind) because it matches the shape of the vehicle. I have my ladder in about the same position as MM indicates and it still doesn't fit under the spoiler.

All of this supposition leads me to believe there is a left-sided ladder for RHD models, and a right-sided ladder for LHD (otherwise the ladder interferes with the bumper mirror). Looking at the Terzo site, my supposition is justified as far as the shape-of-the-vehicle; and all three versions of ladder are still being sold (scroll down and you'll see the L300s) for a variety of vehicles.

On Moon Machine, it's not the left foot which is binding on the spoiler, it's the right, and it's not just by a little bit. Go figure... :?

AAARRGHHH!!!!

I'd just written a long response explaining the different types/variations of Terzo ladders that have been used on L300's then my 'puter crashed!

AAARRGHHH!!!

Basically there are only two 'proper' models of Terzo ladder for L300's: a high roof (like yours, mine, Jesse's etc...) and a low roof one.

Loki's is more than likely an L400 one. I'd put money on it. They only have three rungs, not four and also have the dog-leg on the right because they mount on the drivers side (parking mirror on the passenger side on L400's) and I have seen a whole load of different Terzo's fitted to L300's but there are only two versions specifically for the L300.

The low roof ladder is almost identical to the high roof one except that the vertical bars are slightly shorter above the top rung. The top brackets are also different due to the different shape of the roofline. Take a look at the picture of the low roof ladder I am restoring for the new Mud Monkey, you can see the shorter verticals and different contour on the upper brackets:

Image

Anything else you see is from a different model that has been fitted or adapted then fitted to an L300.

Sayulita101's ladder does look like a proper L300 high roof ladder but the feet don't seem to be sitting right on the roof. This may be becasue the ladder is too far over, but as you say, it's hard to tell anything from that angle hence why I asked for more photos.

In answer to the original question: Can an OEM spoiler be fitted with a Terzo ladder....then these pics from my 'archive' may help answer that question:

Seeing as you guys haven't had much to do with L400's over there, I thought I'd include a pic of a standard Terzo L400 high roof ladder in case Loki wants a closer look to see if his might be one of these?? I've restored 'quite' a few now and custom polished quite a few more!! L400 ladders are much more available here in the UK than L300 ones :-( ....and the L400 owners seem to like giving me money to trick them up! I'm not complaining

yep that L400 model ladder is the same comfiguration as mine, the single peice at the top and the big space between the middle rungs, fits great though, I never would have though that it wasn't for this model.

Well, I can't see what I've done differently in mounting my ladder, but the spoiler doesn't fit over top of it. I've modified the spoiler, slightly, so it will fit and it will barely be noticeable from above or below. Pictures to follow once I finish fixing/fabricating a couple of mounting brackets.

So how much are those bad boys going for? I would love to get a ladder and roof rack for mine, makes it totally look like an expedition vehicle, not to mention very practicle.

On another note I was amazed to see the difference in the rear suspension articulation between Loki and Bruces pictures(third one down). Shows what can be accomplished with some (probably alot) of mods.

Cheers Gary
